Greg Oden was arrested and charged with battery early Thursday morning in Indianapolis.

The former Ohio State star allegedly punched his ex-girlfriend in the face, according to the Indianapolis StarMore from the report:

Officers arrived at the home to find the victim crying and lying across a bed holding her face, police said. A woman described as the victim's best friend first told officers what happened, police said.

"He punched her in the face," the witness said, according to the report.

The victim initially was "uncooperative," police said.

The victim's best friend, police said, told the woman, "There isn't that much love in the world. You need to tell that he punched you in the face."

Police "observed blood, swelling to the nose, lacerations to the forehead and nose area of the victim's face," according to the report. They also "observed blood on the sofa and floor in the sitting area. (They) observed (blood) on the living room carpet (and) dirt from a flower pot that was knocked over."

And more, which details Oden was apologetic about the incident:

Oden was "calm, apologetic and cooperative" when officers spoke with him, police said.

"I was wrong, and I know what has to happen," Oden told police, according to the report.

Oden told police he dated the victim for approximately two years but broke up approximately two months ago, according to the report.

Oden took his mugshot wearing this:

Oden was the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, but nagging injuries have sidelined him for most of his career. Oden played for the Miami Heat last season.

I really wasn't trying to make light of the situation. Hitting a woman is deplorable. They mentioned lacerations and it made me think of when my mom back handed me with her ring hand. Greg deserves whatever he gets.

+6 HS
Squirrel Master's picture

but equating him not winning a championship as a payback for hitting a woman is where you made your mistake! Whether or not he won a championship should have nothing to do with this situation. Instead say Greg deserves whatever punishment he gets, because it should be worse than not winning a championship ring.

It is like saying I'm glad the sky is blue because I farted today!

Squirrel, I believe he just meant that it is good that he didnt have a ring on his hand because the physical ramifications that would have added. Don't think he meant this as a reason Greg didn't win a championship.

did you see the original comment before he changed it? he changed both comments from the original that I commented on. I wish it was like the old website where you couldn't change your comment after others have replied to it. you would still be able to see the sillyness of his statement.

He equated to the karma of not winning a championship to hitting a woman! He said that Oden deserves not winning that championship NOW because of this. It had nothing to do with a ring hurting the girl more, and even if he did win the championship they don't get rings till next season. He wouldn't have had a ring on his finger at this moment either way!

CAVEAT - hitting a woman is never OK, under any circumstances.

That said, a lot of people were saying the same things about Sullinger's off-court demeanor, and what do you know - his girlfriend (fiancee'?) provoked him into a fight. They both admitted they were wrong, and appearances are that they made up and moved on.

NET: let's PLEASE not all be so quick to say what a bag of shit Oden is. All too often, these situations are sensationalized to where the alleged perpetrator is already presumed to be, and oftentimes they are, guilty of the offense. Similarly, facts usually surface to depict two human beings who are imperfect and didn't control themselves and - oh by the way - for that reason really probably shouldn't be together.

The only thing that's new in the world is the history that we have forgotten.

I am so disappointed with Greg !! One would think that given all the recent publicity surrounding the RR situation that athletes would be far more cautious and just walk away from an argument. Hopefully, Silver will have more "balls" than Goodell, and give him a lengthy suspension. If OSU kicked TP to the curb for some petty bs, GO should be banned from campus for an even longer period.

However, what the hell is wrong with people? Am I missing something or did parents stop telling kids to not hit girls a few years ago?Seems like every other day there is a celebrity or athlete charged with shit like this. Unfortunately I don't think it's going to stop unless the punishment Is much more severe.

Not an excuse...but typically men who hit women were hit by their moms when they were kids. IMO, hitting kids is even worse than a man hitting a woman. At least the woman can leave a situation. The kids are stuck.

Yes Bamabuck I understand. That's why I said there is no excuse. I'm talking about trends. Women need to see that abuse against boys can lead to abuse against women. That is how you prevent it...everything starts at childhood. It does no good to scream about moral outrage and not address the cause. And yes, boys are more likely to be hit by moms than girls.

If I say Asian men are short, you are not going to start pointing out tall Asian men, are you? Yes, I know Yao Ming is tall but it adds nothing when discussing trends.

Here's the thing.....Women often want and get their own way.  They rarely give in or up.  They can make a man go crazy sometimes.  I have many years of experience. No matter what your general temperament is they know what buttons to push in order to infuriate.  In the heat of the moment I have been temped many times to jawbone a women.  They know your tipping point and occasionally will try to goad you into striking them.  Some women love to play the DV victim so I don't give them that.  I know some will down vote this but this is true.

My advice to you young unmarried guys contemplating a serious relationship or marriage.....RUN!  The more erotic she is, the more psychotic she is.

+2 HS
Brutus1972's picture

Once you reach the point of wanting to physically assault the person you are in a relationship with, someone has to leave. Obviously you could find out later that you want to assault a bunch of people and realize that you are the one with the problem but for the time being it is a smart thing to agree that it doesn't work and walk.

+3 HS
OSU2002Grad's picture

You know absolutely nothing about the victim in this case and yet you think this comment is somehow applicable or appropriate.

You don't hit anyone. Woman. Man. Child. I really don't care what was said to you. If you don't have to resort to violence, DON'T RESORT TO VIOLENCE. It's a pretty simple rule of human behavior.

Breakawayspeed's picture

I did some business consulting work for a DV program 16 years ago.  While 85% of the police reports had the man assaulting the women the rest had both parties or just the women being physical.  Yeah, I don't know the particulars here and neither does anyone else.  How can you assume was Oden was the perpetrator?

+4 HS

I know people won't agree with you.  I had a girl like this.  One time she got crazy stood in front of the door so I couldn't get out.  Knew all the right buttons to push.  I freaked out ended up jumping out the window and shattering the window to get away.  That was the last time I dealt with her.

WC Buckeye's picture

I think your last sentence sums up circumstances like these perfectly - if it's this volatile and dramatic now, the relationship will not last when other stressors come knocking, and they will come knocking. Say goodbye and get away from each other while it's still uncomplicated. This is gender-neutral advice, too, BTW.

The only thing that's new in the world is the history that we have forgotten.

This is sad. Too bad that Greg's career in the NBA hasn't turned out better, and now this. I won't pile on, and won't troll. In fact, the only reason I came on line is to say that anyone who does this, at any school, or in the pros, or after school and the pros, is way out of line. You can't make excuses for hitting a woman, ever. I don't care if you are a student at UofM, or OSU, or any other Big10 School, or the SEC, etc. It doesn't matter if you're a star in the NBA or NFL or in the MLB. It is just wrong. Unfortunately, too many women refuse to press charges, or to hold accountable those who have done stuff like this. The best I can say is that I hope this is a positive turning point for Oden.

p.s.  The shirt? Every Michigan fan knows where that came from, and can even understand some of the frustration. But make a shirt memorializing it? I dunno, not something I'd wear (obviously,) but even if the shoe was on the other foot (i.e., a Michigan player doing the same thing,) I wouldn't have the shirt, nor would I like it to be worn by anyone.

You know... it's inevitable that we will have current and former players who are in the public eye commit some egregious acts.  Sad to hear another one, but let's face it, uncontrollable anger does not discriminate by age, sex or race.  That said, why did he have to be wearing that shirt!?!  I can't look at that shirt the same way anymore... ugh
