Agree 100%. In college football where there's smoke there's fire.

My guess, Fat molester approaches the 3 recruits. Offers to pay for their dinners and buys a few rounds of drinks. Recruits think the guy is cool and take pic with molester. Molester posts pic and someone recognized the pervert. They contact compliance office. Compliance office contacts recruits and they tell them what went down. Compliance office tells recruit who the pervert really is. Compliance then has to report the NCAA offense. Recruit gets balls busted at school for taking pic with pervert. Recruit de-commits because of humiliation. NCAA hammers OSU with more sanctions. We lose more recruits because of sanctions.

A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

i have a serious issue if we are hand-slapped for something we have absolutely 0 control over like what these kids did on their own time..

Can the NCAA impose sanctions against us for what this guy did (if anything)? As long as he is not a booster it would be ok, right? Wouldnt it be the same as one of the guys dads buying them dinner and drinks? (assuming he has not donated to OSU)

I'm a little bit confused about potential violations as well. Can someone enlighten me on what rules potentially may have been broken with this mess? I don't really know much about recruiting rules or anything

@OSUCompliance
Fans: we know you love the Buckeyes, but extra benefits can be almost anything! (i.e., meals, shirts, gift cards). Don't give things to SAs!

I don't think you can do anything for a student athlete that you wouldn't do for a normal kid off the street.  I could be wrong but that was always my impression of it.  That was tweeted by compliance today.

Well just the fact that they tweeted that makes me feel like it's very likely that we have some sort of violations on our hands. Dammit.

That seems like total bullsh*t...so what if I am a 21 year old OSU student and a recruit who grew up down the street from me visits me at OSU for the weekend and I buy him dinner (like a friend would)? Did I just commit a recruting violation?

(Hypothetical situation, just thought it provided a solid example)

No idea how to quote.  But I don't know if that matters.  K State had to suspend Samuels before their final tourney game because he took $200 from his old summer league coach to buy groceries.

It seems a little much to me, at least for recruits. If these guys are scholarship athletes it can be justified, but for guys who have no affiliation with the university, I dont get how the university can be held responsible for their actions while not supervised.

@RDUBS is there any way to back up that statement? From what I have seen of Smith there are plenty of people who could do the job as well or better. After tatgate he needed to be gone

I am so pissed I am at a loss for words. I have a 2yr old son and the thought of this guy taking pics with under age kids makes me want to cave this dudes skull in. The idea that he even exists after being convicted of having photos of naked under aged boys makes my blood boil but when you add in the fact that he has tried to pose as a die hard Buckeye fan in attempt to live out his perverted fantises just make me want to end his life. Child molesters have serve no purpose what so ever. My heart goes out to Alex and his parents. If it was me, I would've freaked out too. Bottom line is, this sick fucker needs either life in prison or the chair. Fuck him.

Our athletic department has never been better (at the time of the Gator Bowl we had 5 winter teams in the top 10 in the country), gotten better grades (athletes set a record for gpa in the fall of 2011), or made more money.  I think those are the best measures of an AD's ability to lead a department and he has hit it out of the ball park.

His main mistake with tat gate was taking the bad advice he recieved from our communications firm/ lawyers.  He spoke out too much about not thinking we would get a bowl ban.

It just so happens that the scandal was in the most visible sport.  This event has nothing to do with his job.  If anything Meyer or some other coach or staff member should be held accountable for this situation.

In 2005 Matt Sylvester made a game winning 3 against Illinois to ruin their perfect season.  I met Matt at some bar downtown on $1 drink night and offered to buy him a beer, but he said that I couldn't because I would acting as a booster.  I was shocked!  So, I don't think you can provide SA's extra benefits of any kind...which is dumb.  What if an SA is your best friend??

@RDUBS

I agree with you on almost everything. The assertion that he (Gene) didn't listen to communications/consulting firms is flat out wrong though. Exact opposite, from the suggested self-imposed penalties on down ... from the get go, we ignored consultants and their appraisal.

Past that, I agree with you. GS made a fool of himself and the university as a whole but he is not a lame duck that has held OSU down.

Playing along with the hypotheticals....... say OSU were to have some violations slapped at them from potential recruiting mess (not necessarily having an unwanted molester around) but having recruits receiving meals/gifts over official visit guidelines.  Wasn't there a clause in our recent NCAA ruling that would escalate scholarship reductions and bowl ban, if violations occurred before we were off the 3 year probation?

Taspra's picture
Taspra on 7 May 2012 - 10:03pm #

Why do you even think they got any free meals or drink or anything at all? It's not good to even speculate on things like this because they would simply be rumors not facts.

sox33osu's picture
sox33osu on 7 May 2012 - 10:09pm #

That is a possibility John, but just because a fan supposedly buys things for recruits, it isn't a violation unless you can prove it was coordinated by the university. Sounds like OSU did everything they could here as soon as they found out what happened, so I don't see any reason to get the NCAA involved here.

johnblairgobucks's picture
johnblairgobucks on 7 May 2012 - 10:24pm #

^^^ hope so Sox33.  From the 2003 Maurice Clarrett suspension to TatGate, it just seems that when I think it isn't "that big of a deal", the NCAA sure does.
