Ryan Shazier's dad posted a clip of his son running in practice today, the clip was only like three seconds and you can't see much of anything, but he says that Ryan was clocked at a 4.35... Keep in mind that the official roster has him at 226lbs now as well. Absolutely nuts.
Also, remember the rumors a month or two ago about Perkins running a 4.2? Well, looks like the Silver Bullets are going to live up to their name this year.

I'm not sure there was news about Perkins running a 4.2. I know he can consistently run 4.3-4.4, which is blazing. Shazier will be a monster.
season: please start, now!
Apparently Roby ran a 4.31
either these times are fast or marotti didn't just make them bigger, but he actually did make them faster.
John Simon also ran a 4.31...... except he was going uphill on a mountain in 3 feet of snow.
I hate to break it to you, but Meyer runs a fast clock on his players. Always has.

But yeah, here's where that Perkins rumor came from... none other than David Perkins himself.
I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.
@roger, I wouldn't be shocked if it was a motivational ploy, but you have to remember that the guys at the top of that chart in Florida were All-American track sprinters and Olympic Trial competitors. Also, they were probably run on a track, whereas they run them on turf in the combine, right?
Also, the Shazier vid looks like it's on turf at the WHAC.
I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.
If you believe those times, I've got a bridge to sell you.
Come on guys, seriously? Did you know gullible is written on the ceiling? Coaches are ALWAYS generous when clocking their own players. Shazier is fast for sure, but come on....Chris Johnson has the fastest recorded 40 at the combine at a 4.24. So for a big guy like Shazier, as well as half of Florida's team in the earlier post, is among the fastest ever to play the game...I don't buy it for a second. He has great speed for a LB, and great all around, but no way in hell. Definitely a motivational tactic by Meyer.
Joey Galloway ran a 4.19 at the combine from what I remember, and Champ Bailey was close as well. On a track, the times are going to be faster than they are on turf.
I never said I believed the times, but Perkins has consistently been clocked around a 4.3, and Shazier I think was around a 4.4 when he signed. Brad Roby running a 4.3 doesn't shock me either. Even if it is a motivational thing by Meyer, I love it.
I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.
I watched the clip, and Shazier certainly looked fast, maybe not 4.3 fast, but certainly fast. As for the Chris Johnson 4.24 40, there are several faster reported forties that are considered legit.

4.3 I seriously doubt, 4.5 maybe high 4.4, seems more reasonable. It doesn't matter though because we all know Shazier has serious on field speed, and that's all that matters. As for Perkins, I'll never believe a highschooler's 40 time unless he has been to a couple of camps, and the times are consistent. I would love a LB crew that all ran 4.5 or better, and probably depending on Sabino's time we might have that now.
I believe the 4.22 out of the blocks at track practice. On turf with no blocks, it probably translates to around a 4.38.
Don't forget about Curtis Grant, from what I hear he's shaped up well also. No mention of 40 times though
@ShadyBuckeye, no one else mentioned it, so I will. I LOL'ed at your comment, very nice, haha
Gotta remember these are hand timed
Dubjay/Shady: I was going to say that the mountain ran a 4.3, in mortal fear, trying to get away from Simon.
All these times are shady, he's a fast mofo though! I'd say he's a legit 4.5 at the Nfl combine in 2014.
Run_Fido's favorite word is strawman.
In order to break 4.3 anymore at the combine anymore someone is going to have to be real special. Rainey didnt even break 4.35. So far any 40 time that is under cj2k's time was done before everything was electronic. example: taylor mays 4.22 getting changed to a 4.38 i believe?
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
Totally talking football speed, not track speed from my post about Perkins.
I've always wondered... why dont they make guys run 40s in pads & helmet?!
^extra like this comment DBIT. That has driven me nuts for years. How many times do you run a 40 in a football game in a straight line? Maybe occassionally if you're a WR or DB (though the DB's backpedal the first part anyway). How many times do you do it in no pads or helmet? Zero. Good thing it's the most important thing people pay attention to for skill players at the combine these days
When told OSU set school record for 50+ games this year, UFM said "That's good. We're gonna break that next year."
40 times are so overrated. Are you really going to tell me that there is a huge difference between running a 4.3 and a 4.5? If the same guy ran twice and got a 4.3 and then a 4.5 they would look identical to a casual observer.
@CBUS
There is a difference between a guy who consistently runs a 4.3 and a guy who consistently runs 4.5. Go watch highlights of Ted Ginn pulling away from 4.4/4.5 DB's.
Overrrated, yes, but only by the media that desperately tries to quantify performance because they lack the football know-how to do so otherwise or the ability to convey that knowledge to Joe Sixpack. But a tenth of a second is worth one-two steps at game speed. If you can put two steps on a guy consistently in FBS football, you are playing on Sundays.
My problem is that a tenth in shorts and a t shirt isn't a tenth on the field, necessarily. it might be, but it's not 100% correlated. Some guys play slower in pads than they run, some guys play faster. Why not at least have them run it in football conditions, fully padded. It's closer to reality at least.
When told OSU set school record for 50+ games this year, UFM said "That's good. We're gonna break that next year."
@OSUBIAS - I think that the motivational benefits of getting the absolute fastest 40 times far exceed the worth of the drill in pads. Even if the results may not be 100% accurate, you want your kids to believe they can run circles around the competition.
Hodge, I don't doubt the motivational psychology behind Urbs doing it. I should have specified that I think it's useless at the combine as a differentiator of talent (at least at the more finite level. Obviously a 4.4 is faster than a 4.7) because it doesn't necessarily translate to the field
When told OSU set school record for 50+ games this year, UFM said "That's good. We're gonna break that next year."
I agree, but anything that isn't playing football or doing football drills is really just GPP for the sport. Chasing numbers in the weightroom and track will never 100% correlate to on field performance, but it can be generally assumed that bigger/faster/stronger players will at least have the potential to be better players on the field. And when the combine rolls around, they have dozens of hours of tape on the guys playing football to make a better determination.
It's the same scenario with star ratings for recruits. A 3 star can certainly wind up being an All-American and a 5 star can bomb out, but it's not as statistically likely. For every 3 star who becomes John Simon, there are hundreds playing in FCS.
I don't care what Shazier's 40 time is, he plays fast. I remember a play from the PSU game last year. He moved laterally from one hash to the other, and when a lane opened up, he shot about 7 yards straight ahead and stopped Stefon Green in the backfield for a loss. Dude has football speed, and plenty of it.
AJ Hawk ran a 4 point three-star recruit.
Taquitos.
... and then sacked Brady Quinn again and (verb redacted) his sister.
the fastest "legitimate" (quotations for irony) 40 yard dash ever run (at least up until a couple of years ago- usain bolt may have topped it) was by tim montgomery, who used to hold the 100 meters record until it was discovered that he had more testosterone than secretariat. his time was in the mid 4.4's. you can disagree, but i'll take the word of the physicists at MIT. they're kind of good at science.

@mastermind: I think actually Maurice Greene set it when he set the world record in the 60 meter indoor (which still stands and he was never busted). That was 4.18 (and he had to react to the gun so if you take off about .25 for reaction he was under 4!!).
Usain might have broken that when he set the 100 record because his 60m split was .08 faster, but I haven't seen a 40 yard split so I'll leave it with Greene until I do.
