Purdue Shotputter Dani Bunch Benches 315 Pounds

By DJ Byrnes on June 30, 2014 at 11:26a

So, this is a little insane. Here's Dani Bunch, a shotputter for the Purdue women's track team, throwing up 315 lbs on the bench press.

I don't even think I could get 315 lbs out of the rack. So, I do not want to fight Dani Bunch because she would probably break my neck with a snap of her fingers.

I do, however, want to fight anybody who films things vertically. It's 2014, folks. We shouldn't be going through this rudimentary lesson every week.

everybody should work out, and calling a woman a man just cuz she's good at it is a pretty crappy/sexist thing to do imo, so i wouldnt go as far as "disgusting" but i agree with your overall sentiment!

I bet Nick Mangold's sister Molly (?) could give her a run for her money.

boo!  he got it out of the rack for her and only let go once her momentum was going. so she could straighten her arms.   nevertheless.... very impressive for a young lady.

The strong will stand, the weak will fall by the wayside.  100% and then some!

Yeah not to take anything away from her but that spotter needs to let go of the bar for it to count

At first I thought she would be a bigger woman (see: Holley Mangold), then I was impressed that she looks 'normal'ish, then I watch her sternum cave in and but shoot off the bench and spotter finish the last half of the lift (which is usually the hardest part) and am not at all impressed.

In reference, I have about a 330 bench, if I did what she did I could probably get up 380-400 or so (though I'm not going to try it because I like having my breast bone in one piece).

No way would anyone I know count that attempt. I remember hitting 350 for the first time in college but having the attempt thrown out because my spotter brushed the bar with his hand; this is way more than that.

"not at all" impressed? I agree that it's an imperfect rep in a lot of ways, but she still lifted 2x what most women I know could barely attempt.

It's not 'imperfect,' it's not even a rep. It would never count to anyone except worthless strength and conditioning coaches who don't mind their athletes getting hurt in the gym with lifts that don't even really help them with their sport.

Comparing her to women you know is pointless, she is a collegiate athlete at the highest level. If she bench 225 with good form, that would be 10 times more impressive.

She had help and bad form as her ass should stay firmly planted on the bench.  Have her do 10 reps at 225lbs instead and I'd be impressed.

To be fair, those are all geared lifts

Raw American records are:

Class Lift Name Year Fed
97 176 Ann Leverett 1991 USPF
105 220 April Shumaker 02/09/14 RUPC
114 231 Mary Jeffery 1991 USPF
123 248 Vicky Steenrod 1984 USPF
132 300 Jennifer Thompson 03/02/12 USAPL
148 303 Jennifer Thompson 05/18/13 USAPL
165 305 Julie Scanlon 2006 NERB
181 325 Jill Brown- Mills 1999 USPF
198 360 Shannon Nash 11/12/11 SPF
198+ 435 April Mathis 08/24/13 RPS

Let's say Dani wears under 181, her bench would almost be an American record (which has been held for 15 years). And that record bench press was done with judges, butt on the bench, no bounce, no spotter yanking the bar up.

jennifer thompson is one of my fitness heroes/heroines, her technique is really technically great while also looking effortless

I watched and said to myself rather confidently "I can almost bench what she can" and then I realized "I can almost bench what SHE can".

To be fair I dont think anyone involved in that video gives a shit about competition rules and what counts. I dont think the spotter helped her I think he was very unsure of her safety and had that first in his mind. Weird to see dudes get all bent out of shape from watching a chic do imperfect non counting single bench press.

Mark my words..I don't need acceptance. I'm catching interceptions on you innocent pedestrians.

11UrbzAndSpices's picture

I call bullshit when it needs to be called. Again, it's not imperfect form, it's horrendous form where she could have crushed her sternum and only moved the bar from the force generated from the rebound off of her chest. Remember Stefon Johnson at USC crushed his trachea with 275 lb on his throat and was out for his senior year because of an irresponsible coach.

Wouldn't be any different if I claimed to throw a football 100 yards, leaving out the fact that I used a Vortex football and threw it from the top of a building.

Johnny Ginter's picture

it's a really bad press, but frankly if i even tried that it would literally kill me and i'm still impressed. i want to see a legit bench press from her because she should be able to get 250ish, which is still a great number

ArizonaBuckeye's picture

Yeah, that's not a clean rep at all. Still pretty strong for a girl though. I can rep 315 pretty consistently, so I'm a bit of a tough sell.
