Ryan Shazier: "I'm Leaning Towards Staying."

War Damn Shazier

EVERYBODY SETTLE DOWN! QUIET IN THE BACK!

Per the indomitable Kyle Rowland:

It's long been assumed Ryan Shazier would declare for the 2014 NFL draft, but that speculation could be a bit premature. While it's still early in the process, and we don't want to throw a party only to see it turn to ash, having Ryan Shazier back for his senior season would be an unexpected Christmas gift for us all.

I never imagined that he'd even consider coming back. Please, oh please do what Mike Doss did and come back to win a championship!

Shazier to come back for his senior season would be great, another year of college hitting  the books closer to a degree and a senior year with your beloved teammates and coaches in a College atmosphere.. I have been there and done that,,, sorry to say the next level is all business and no heart!!  If I could do it over I would have stayed 10 out of 10 times.  Saying that the college years are priceless is an understatement, money is the root of most evils; and the bed of fools.  The college years, the friendships, teammates, A college with a loyal and devote fan base, & school base!!! You receive none of that in the NFL: contracts, greed, no player of coach loyalty, fan base   is array , where is the fun??  Where is the true family situation and love for the sport?  I for one do not even watch the  NFL, it  has become too commercialized, greed, sex, & money Machine...no thank you!

Oooo, I don't like the sound of that.  I would LOVE to see him back in Scarlet and Gray next year *personally,* but as 11W has written it likely won't help his draft stock (he can't improve much from a statistical standpoint).
I would rather see him go in the late first round this year than see him get Roby-ied next year..

BAR43's picture

Its not always about the money for some guys. So excited he is looking to come back as I believe he has true passion for the college game and playing with teammates, not co-workers. Some things are more important than money and the carefree life of a college student is something you can never get back. I think there are plenty of us on here that had a great time at college and would trade in the working life to go back for carefree college.

BIG difference. Shazier has been dominant since his freshman year. 3 solid years. Roby had a "good" freshman year, a great sophomore year and an up and down Jr. year.  With that being said, Roby will still be a 1st round pick or an early 2nd round pick.
People have made Roby the scapegoat for the pass defense this season, when most of the stuff isn't even on him.  He had 2 horrible games this season (Cal and Wisconsin), which just happened to be his first couple of games back. If you know the CB position like I do, then you would know Roby has been very good this season. Sure he got beat a couple of times this season, but name me 1 CB who doesn't get beat.

Agreed. Charles woodson was beating badly in his last OSU game in Ann Arbor by David  Boston .I was at that game and watched Boston torch him for one TD, and could have had more if our QB got him the ball.

Shazier was hardly dominant as a freshman.  He was undisciplined, missed as many tackles as he made, and was wildly inconsistent.
That being said, PLEASE STAY RDS!!!

For the standards of a freshman playing LB, very rare, he was a stud.

I can only say one thing. Follow your gut feeling on this. It will be the right decision.

If he stays, I feel about 100x more confident about our defense for next year.

i mentioned to my brother that when RDS didn't come out with the Seniors (and Roby) for Senior Day, he wasn't 100% leaving.

Buckeye Chuck's picture

I don't think there's any precedent for a third-year junior to come out with the seniors, even when it's been widely assumed he's leaving for the draft.
The "I'm going to talk it over with my family" leads me to believe he's actually leaning towards leaving, and doesn't want to say so because he doesn't want to spend the next 3 weeks getting hammered by people who claim that they're only thinking about what's best for him. We'll find out soon enough.

I keep saying this but I feel like his father said he would be a 4 year Buckeye. I can't blame the kid either way, but I'd selfishly love to see him stick around.

Shazier's situation reminds of a similar situation James Laurinaitis was in.  If I recall he stayed because he was having so much fun at tOSU and did not want to give that up so quick.  I also recall AJ Hawk advised him to stay because you can only be a senior and big man on campus once in your life so enjoy it.  If he decides to come back it will help solidify his abilities and make him a top 5/10 pick.  Hopefully he stays and tOSU can continue this special run it's is on.
BTW....I would take out a nice insurance policy, Just in Case.

I have a similar memory regarding the Lil Animal story. He definitely needs to protect his $$ future if he stays.

I've said all along I thought he would stay. His family background is mainly why I think so. He seems like a quality dude and I think he wants the education. I understand guys leaving early when bills need paid, but I don't think Shazier is in a tough spot financially.

cjmgobucks's picture

Agreed... I have no facts to support this but it seems like he comes from a solid family background that values education and faith, first and foremost.  I know the NFL window is small, but you can never get that college experience back once you leave it...Even if you do come back to finish your degree.  It's just never the same.  Whatever he chooses, he has represented TOSU well and, FWIW, he has my undivided support...

I remember him saying a while ago that he wants to put on more weight to prove he can still play with the added mass. Would be great!

alust2013's picture

I wouldn't be surprised if he did come back. Both Hawk and Laurinaitis came back for senior seasons and neither needed to. Either way, he will get drafted high when he does go, and if he plays anything like he has at Ohio State, he will make a name for himself in the pros.

...and Michigan still sucks.

Carpenter too.  We are LB (come back if you are rated a 1st rounder) U.  At least post-Tressel.

Regardless of what RDS does, I have truly enjoyed having him on our side.  He plays like his hair is on fire and next year immediately 'feels' better if he were back.  The decision to do what is best for himself and his family is his and will be fully supported by this Buckeye.  Go Bucks!

I remember RDS dad being adamant about him staying for four years. They way he put was college is for four years and we want RDS to get his degree. This was either before this season or last year.

NashBuckeye's picture

I would love it if he stays but have no problem with him if he doesn't.  Any player that is going to be a 1st round pick has got to seriously think about going and getting the $$$.
Good luck RDS! Make the best decision for yourself.

CentralFloridaBuckeye's picture

This would be great news if he came back!  I would love it!  I think his future will still be bright.  If he goes early, which most of us thought would happen, he would be drafted pretty high.  If he does stay another year we all know the type of player he is.  Even if his stats are now as high, he is still an awesome player.  Most likely teams will focus even more on trying to block him, so you can't put everything into stats.  Please come back Ryan!  I'd love to see you play some more in the Shoe!!!
Go Bucks!

All I can say is, praise be to the football gods and Ryan Shazier if he stays.  He's the brightest spot on an utterly underwhelming defense.
