Carl Pelini has resigned... that much is clear. At first, it wasn't all that suspicious because Florida Atlantic is 5-15 under him, but it appears there's a lot more smoke coming from the wreckage:

UPDATED: 4:09 PM. As SILVERSTATE originally pointed it out, Carl Pelini and defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis attended a "social gathering" where the Devil's Lettuce was present. Pelini and Rekstis were confornted by the school's general counsel, admitted to drug use and are now out of jobs.

This now concludes Worst Month Ever™ for the Pelini boys.

If this ends up being true, it might be among the lamest excuses ever.  I was expecting something so much worse.  He hasn't been lighting up the field at FAU and it seems like a weird fit, but still this seems like a weak reason.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Seriously? Over weed?  He didnt even smoke and he basically loses his job. What a joke. Literally, I cant stop laughing.
Even if he did use, so what? It's weed

No matter what your opinion is on marijuana, it is still illegal in the state of Florida

The offseason begins when your season ends. Even then there are no days off.

Dean's picture

Lots of people are around lots of illegal things.  They aren't usually forced to resign over, say, being in a bar that a drunk person drives home from, or failing to report their friend's traffic-related misdemeanors.  Use and possession of marijuana may be illegal in Florida, but presence in the same building (or even room) as and knowledge of it seems like a very flimsy excuse for firing.

He was at a party where someone had pot.  That is a lot different even than if he were the one using, or supplying.  Maybe there is more to the story, but if this is it, then it is pretty weak.
I once saw someone speeding, there was another time where I was a passenger in a car where someone wasn't wearing a seat belt.  Should I be fired?
EDIT: As people are now reporting that there is more to it and they were apparently using.  That makes it more understandable.

I used to smoke weed in my later teen years, and when I was in Florida visiting friends and family I went with some chums to obtain some.  They treated it like a goddamm crack deal.  There was the getting out of my car, getting in the dealer's car, driving around the block, and then me picking my friend up at the gas station down the street.
I asked what was up and apparently you can easily get 6 months for mere possession of an OZ or more in Florida.

I once heard Dennis Dodd from CBSSports.com on a radio interview refer to Bo and Carl Pelini as the 'Flying Pelini Brothers'. I laughed so hard when I heard him say that cause it made me picture them as daredevil stuntmen or a tag-team wrestling duo.

Wow!  Who would of thought?  This guy has Bo as his brother and took the Florida Atlantic job to get away from him.  Of course he smokes pot!!!!

Matt F's picture

At Miami, that's not even considered a party.

Squirrel Master's picture

Funny, if he was coaching in Colorado or Washington then he would be perfectly okay with this.
I do find it funny that a student could fail a drug test for marajuana and only get a reprimand or warning, but if a coach is in the same room as it he gets fired. Odd indeed!

I saw a UFO once.......it told me to have a goodyear!

Unky Buck's picture

Here's what I'm wondering, Squirrel: While it is illegal there, given the multiple chances players get when they have smoked it, why would this cause a firing, especially if he just happened to be at a party and he didn't do it? I would think there has to be something more than just he was a party where pot was "being used", even if he was one of the ones using it. I'll guess we'll see how this turns out, but by the way it's being presented, there just has to be more to this.

...

Squirrel Master's picture

oh yeah, this is fishy as hell! I would have expected this story more from Nebraska really the way they are dying to get Bo out of there, the fans at least.
As a former Floridian, I can attest to the fact that marajuana is a joke down there. For a coach to be "supposedly" fired for this is ridiculous. In Florida, especially around a certain gator clad area, its all over the place. There are bigger issues in the drug world, see ARod, in south Florida and the panhandle than just some pot. This is a joke and they better have some real reason they fired him because I think he could take legal action if this is the real case.
I mean a former Miami coach gets a 2 game suspension for way worse and this guy gets fired because he was in the same room as that stuff. Come on!

lol they trying to get out of a contract or something?  this seems pretty lame

tennbuckeye19's picture

So much for the "being in the same room as" excuse:
USA Today is reporting that Pelini and FAU's defensive coordinator resigned because of "illegal drug use". I guess they both took turns with the old left handed cigarette.
Also from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel:

FAU football coach Carl Pelini resigned Wednesday after he was confronted by the school's athletic director over reports of illegal drug use.
FAU athletic director Pat Chun announced during a press conference both Pelini and defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis tendered their resignations and were escorted off campus by police after being questioned about their ties to illegal substances.
Chun told the Sun Sentinel Pelini and Rekstis both admitted to "illegal drug use."

But think of the children!
Seriously, this is idiotic. Who gives a shit if Carl Pelini was toking it up? At least he wasn't endangering anyone like that drunken asshat Gary Pinkel. It's a fucked up world we live in where driving under the influence gets you a one game suspension (Pinkel), but smoking some green gets you fired (Pelini).

He should have worried more about QBs rolling out of the pocket instead of rolling doobies. But now he'll have plenty of time to roll doobies when he's living in a van down by the river.
