Alabama Strength Coach Placed on Administrative Leave

Haha, Clinton-Dix!

The good times are continuing to roll (Tide) in Tuscasloosa. When you combine this gem from 2013 NFL first-rounder DJ Fluker last April, the Yahoo! Sports investigation that confirmed Fluker's assertions and today's announcement that the Crimson Tide were suspending assistant strength and conditioning coach Corey Harris for providing impermissible benefits to suspended safety Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix, there's a pretty uncomfortable picture developing down south.

From TuscaloosaNews.com:

University of Alabama assistant strength and conditioning coach Corey Harris has been placed on administrative leave for providing impermissible benefits to suspended football safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, The Tuscaloosa News has learned.

UA head coach Nick Saban announced Wednesday that Clinton-Dix has been indefinitely suspended for violation of team rules but did not specify the nature of the violation.

Assistant strength and conditional coach Corey Harris has been placed on administrative leave. In looking into the matter, the UA compliance office also discovered that Harris had a connection to a representative of a sports agent. UA's internal investigation has found no indication that Clinton-Dix has had contact with any agent or agent representative. Efforts to reach Harris were unsuccessful.

Sooooo, Alabama had a runner on their staff. No big deal. Definitely not anything to see here, even though 'Bama, removed from NCAA probation in 2012, is still sitting within the "window" for being labeled a repeat offender by the governing body. As other allegations have fallen to the wayside, it appears unlikely the NCAA will act on this latest transgression as well.

This is nothing, nothing at all. Have you seen Alabama's shiny BCS trophies? They're right over this way...

Geez, if only there were some sort of organization that could investigate these sorts of things.
I'm sure ESPN will delve deeply, though.

Relevant information:

Harris made a short-term loan to Clinton-Dix in an amount less than $500 at some point in the summer, ... [still a violation] ...
Clinton-Dix has provided bank records to UA athletic compliance department representatives that show a withdrawal in the amount he said he repaid to Harris.

Probably a 1-2 game suspension if I had to guess.

How many rules can Bama break before they actually get a punishment. I dont care how small they seem to be to all you SEC types but I remember some small rules being broken at other schools and those schools being crucified. I'm glad a bank statement shows he took the money out but that doesnt prove a whole lot in terms of "repayment"

Matt F's picture

ALL OF THEM RULES

Catch 5's picture

For one, UA discovered this and acted on it before the press found out anything. It didn't take them discovering it to force action. Secondly, and more importantly they didn't cover it up.

Wonderful- they turned themselves in, but a rule was broken and a punishment should follow.

Catch 5's picture

Agreed, that's why he is suspended until cleared. Probably a couple of games.

How the hell do you not know a member of your *staff* is a runner? A crime that is known by the staff is *inherently* covered up. This isn't some random booster you have no control over.

Catch 5's picture

Since these runners don't usually advertise themselves, it is possible. More to the point, there is no evidence this coach is a runner. All that has been said is that he had a connection to an agent. What coach doesn't? Most, if not all coaches have relationships with agents, including their own.

Christ, tatgate was a lesser "crime".  Unfortunately, we WILL NEVER SEE the heavy hand like played on us, USC, etc again.  The NCAA is the king with no clothes.  Under the old standard would this be a big deal?   Oh, Absolutely.  But not today.    It sucks, but so does our government today.  #justmoveon #cope

SATAN RECEIVED AN EMAIL ABOUT THIS IN APRIL AND NEVER TOLD ANYBODY. ONLY RELEASED NOW BECAUSE THIS IS THE EASIEST PART OF THEIR SCHEDULE.

For real though, there is a lot of smoke down in Tuscaloosa. I have a hard time believing theres no fire.

Absolutely, as long as you also recognize that this was the car that was broken into, where many of his possessions and money were stolen - right before he apparently got this loan assumedly to get him by until the insurance check came in.

This should be required reading for every kid at least 2x during their schooling.  Best kids book ever!  Sometimes I think the Buckeyes are the Horse.

EvanstonBuckeye's picture

I read it every year with my students and always find a new nugget that I never noticed before. Only 139 pages and just jammed with gold. In thinking of the SEC-media lovefest, I can't help but think of the final scene with the pigs and the farm owners: "The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which."

How is this NOT worse than players selling their own memorabilia?  This was a member of the coaching staff giving a current player money.

lippertini's picture

C'mon, it wasn't the memoriabilia-selling that got us in big trouble, it was the cover-up by the head coach.

vitaminB's picture

Nope.  They were facing four game suspensions before the Tressell info even came out. IIRC.

CincyOSU's picture

True, but without Tressel's coverup he doesn't lose his job, the media doesn't continue to dig into our program, and we likely walk away without a bowl ban and schollie reductions.
Tressel lying was the major issue with our  scandal.

gobucks96's picture

AKA...as long as Saban can have an asst. coach to fall on, this isn't a big deal to anyone. Although, it's a bigger problem than what happened here...
The problem should be the cumulative effect of everything that has happened recently with agents and former players.. But, it won't be..

setman's picture

So when Nick Saban referred to agents and their runners as "pimps", he was actually referring to his own staff? The irony is just too good to be true.

Anyone know how long ago this happened? If this happened in mid-summer Bama could be in some trouble. A member of the coaching staff (strength coach) had knowledge and did not report it. I'm assuming it happened recently and Saban found out just yesterday. But if it did happen awhile ago I think Bama should get pitch-forked.
Whatever happened to the Deer Antler spray stuff, DJ Fluker and this?

Notor's picture

As much as the schadenfreude is nice, rules like this are still INCREDIBLY lame and unfair to athletes. Keep in mind what happened to use with the tatgate nonsense. I seriously doubt Ha Ha Clinton-Dix came from an upper-middle class background and demonizing college athletes for taking money is a complete joke.

Idaho Helga's picture

Upper middle class and the name Ha Ha are opposed.   I might get called a hater, but I'm making a guess here.  I have no idea of their race, they were just stupid or worse, mean in naming that kid.

vitaminB's picture

It's a nick name.  His real name is Ha'Sean.

Scarlet_Lutefisk's picture

Well that's far more upscale.

EvanstonBuckeye's picture

Unique name, for sure, but to imply lower socio-economic status or race, in this day and age, just seems off-course. Why not just focus on the accusations?

cal3713's picture

Yeah, it's a real tough life getting a full ride to college, getting all your meals paid for, and getting free rent for four to five years.  Plus a personal nutritionist, free medical care, and a personal weight trainer.  Can we just all admit that the players are actually already getting paid?  I'm tired of hearing about how college athletes are victims because these legal forms of payment are somehow perceived as insufficient.

otrain2416's picture

I'm shocked that him or any SEC player would accept extra money or benefits -said no one ever

Deadly Nuts's picture

So Alabama should get all of this years wins up to this point vacated. Then suspend Ha Ha for 5 games. Alabama's record would then be 0-0 with no wins over Top 25 teams. That means they should fall in the polls.

LEBRON

cplunk's picture

Fall? Pretty sure at 0-0 the AP voters would leave them number one because they haven't lost yet, and the media would rank their schedule harder than ours because the teams they didn't play are in, or near, the SEC. Just being around SEC teams is harder than playing non-SEC teams.

Jhesse17's picture

Please don't make this kid a villain...... The NCAA is the bad guy here.

Deadly Nuts's picture

I hope you are being sarcastic... After what happened to Pryor and company, I don't give a flying fuck who is the "bad guy" is. Every team needs to be treated equally.

LEBRON

Jhesse17's picture

The NCAA being the piece of complete bullshit it is, I doubt Alabama even gets punished. The kid will probably miss a couple games. But would it really make you feel better if the NCAA gives the kid the 6 games the tat-5 got? Does he really deserve that for taking a loan? I think not.

buckskin's picture

I'm assuming administrative leave is paid leave; so like a paid vacation and return to your job when the dust settles.  They sure showed him!)

johnny cash football

gobucks96's picture

The problem with Alabama's arguement is that the kid obtained a student loan for the brand new car, but.... (here's the catch) needed a $500 loan from an assistant. The BS meter just went flying..
How many instances need to happen here? Flunker? TT warehouse? Come on..

Catch 5's picture

His car was broken into and they stole money, an Ipad, clothes, and several other items.  If his wallet was in the car and he lost his credit/bank cards along with his cash, it is entirely likely that he needed some help until he could replace those items and get the insurance money.
Even if he still had his wallet it is entirely possible that he was out of money toward the end of the semester, especially if he used a very large chunk of that semester's loans to purchase a car.  With that in mind, it is very possible he needed a couple hundred bucks to get through the next month - when a new round of financial aid would be available.
