Quarterback Brandon Harris Commits to LSU

Les Miles gets his QB

Bossier City (LA) Parkway signal-caller Brandon Harris committed to LSU today during a live chat on ESPN.com. Harris chose the Tigers over Auburn and Ohio State.

Harris' commitment puts an end to the speculation that Ohio State could take two quarterbacks in this class after receiving a verbal commitment from Stephen Collier last month. The dual threat quarterback did tell Elevenwarriors that Ohio State was still recruiting him and he was strongly considering the Buckeyes after Collier's commitment, but the pull of the home state Tigers proved to be too strong.

LSU picks up their quarterback just days after Auburn landed Elite 11 quarterback Sean White. Harris is the 14th commitment for LSU.

Any honest opinions on Collier? To me, he's a great human being who will provide leadership skills for the team at the very least, but he looks like a long term project to me. Maybe I'm just spoiled with having Braxton, Kenny G (best backup QB in the country?) and JT Barrett. Lol.

AndyVance's picture

We are spoiled/have been spoiled with athletic sensations like Miller and Pryor at the QB position as of late - but it's easy to forget that what makes a great quarterback is often his intellect and football smarts, not just his arm cannon and legs. By all accounts, Collier is not only a physically gifted young man, but a pretty darn bright one, too.
Project or not, I think he's going to be a solid addition to our team, and with the stable of QBs we have, he shouldn't have to be our #1 gunslinger anytime soon, giving him time to develop all the facets of his game under the watchful eye of the Master.

Wholeheartedly agree, Andy.

It's also worth remembering that the primary quarterback on Urban's first championship team was Chris Leak.

Don't forget Cardale Jones either.

I think JT is the future, and Collier needs development. But I also think Collier has the aptitude aptitude and work ethic necessary to improve.

Said it when be committed, saying it now....I'm glad he's on board.

My honest opinion is that I want every player we recruit to turn into a superstar and I wish them all the best in making that a reality. However, with Braxton, Barrett and who knows who we'll recruit next year, I am not sure about Collier. One will start and the rest will push them to stay the starter and fight for 2nd string. He'll get his shot. It's up to him and his ability.

Thanks TexasBuck...I think that's where I might have been going with that, but I must not have enough aptitude there.

All said, again, glad Collier is our guy. He'll make us proud, whether it be on or off the football field.

Reading your first comment, Hove, and I'd say that technically, you had too many "aptitudes" there and one less "attitude"!
Or you coulda just said he had aptitude squared?

Have to agree with you on Collier. I am not impressed with him at all.

southernstatesbuckeye's picture

Hey, to be offered by Ohio State through a coach like Urban Meyer, and to be clear enough to the young man that it was a committable offer on the spot, and the kid jumped at the chance to play at OSU...and Meyer and the team welcomed him in...well, that's good enough for me.
I know things don't always pan out for these kids the way they want, but crap man, if I was actually him, and heard that a significant number of my team's fans despised me, I would be discouraged enough to at least have a chip on my shoulder (sometimes good), or worse, let my work ethic go because I was hated anyway...
But hey...the key word there is significant.  Thankfully, only a tiny percentage of Buckeye fans would prejudge all these kids who have never hit a college field, and somehow pick a loser out of them...and post it for them to see.
Once they are a Buckeye, and continue to conduct themselves sensibly under the watchful eyes of this staff...I will embrace every one of them, down to the unknown walk-on who just wants to put on a Buckeye uniform.
EDIT: Sorry if I sounded harsh there, dude.  Didn't mean to rant.  I don't like to attack people, and could have found a kinder way to say it.

BTwrestle04's picture

I am entitled to my opinion. I take no offense with what you wrote at all. It is your opinion and I respect that. However if he gets rattled by a random person on the internet, I would question whether he has what it takes to be scrutinized at Ohio State.

Also, never once did I call him a "loser." I simply said I wasn't impressed with what I have seen so far.

People really need to stop downvoting people for their opinions. Downvotes are intended to stop trolls not for disagreements. Upvote for you, even though I don't agree with you.

AndyVance's picture

What I am about to say is not a criticism of the previous poster, but generally speaking opinions are generally expected to have a bit more substance than "I don't like X," or in this case, "I'm not impressed with," to avoid getting at least one or two downvotes. Most commenters here want to have a discussion, and simply saying "I don't like something" isn't substantive enough to actually count as conversation.
On the other hand, saying "I'm not impressed with Recruit X because he lacks A, B and C," or, "I would have preferred to land Recruit Y because 1, 2 and 3," then you can have a contrary opinion all day long and not expect to be taken to the woodshed.

cajunbuckeye's picture

Even though Recruit X may lack A, B and C, he more than makes up for it with D, E and F. I'm happy that X is a Buckeye and I wish Y the best of luck at LSU.

@ BT:
Sure you're entitled to your opinion...just one problem.  You're making it seem (because Collier wasn't rated as high as others) that he sucks or isn't good enough to be OSU's QB. I think you're wrong!  IF you watch his highlight tape, it's not quite as good as Watson but he's just as good if not better than Harris.  Harris has a better cannon but I think Collier's more accurate based on the only thing I have to go off of (Harris/Collier).  I think I'd wait to see what exactly JT does before we worry about Collier.  I'm still not sure (now after we know who the QB is) why we're still worrying about it.  Collier won't see the field for 3 years at the earliest.  One other thing, who would have thought that Kenny G would come in and beat Purdue in OT?  I know I sure didn't.  I tend to think Collier will be a back up.  So he really doesn't have to be a Watson or whomever is more impressive or what have you.  Not to mention he has room to grow and possibly he'll live up tp ppls expectations.  Apparently he already has to Urban and Co.

Fact: You don't get a commitable offer to be a qb at an elite program such as OSU for nothing.
Fact: You don't get invited to the Elite Eleven camp for nothing.
Collier has his entire sr year to raise his stock while Harris has his senior year to possibly do the opposite. I'm not mad at Harris at all but these guys are still so young and all have much to prove including character traits. Plus like a previous poster said we have other options at qb to rely on if Collier doesn't work out.

I feel bad for Harris. I hope he "bucks" the trend down there at LSU (pun intended). I like rooting for them against Bama and Les is hilarious. But they have always been hideous at QB. Hope he can turn that around and take out Ol' Nick once or twice.

When Harris goes to LSU he will be one of quarterbacks on their roster. That's right 7.

I wouldn't be shocked if that number dropped to 4 or 5 by 2014.

tennbuckeye19's picture

Yeah, I would think so. They are carrying 7 (w/ walk-ons) for 2013 and Zach Mettenberger is the only senior. But they've got Rob Bolden, a transfer from PSU, who's a redshirt junior, Philip Rivers's brother Stephen, who will be a sophomore, former Louisville coach Steve Kragthorpe's son Brad is also a sophomore, and then they will have 3 freshman QB's on the roster including former Elite 11 finalist Anthony Jennings.

I really don't get all the negative comments about Collier.  First, Urban obviously likes him.  All I hear from everyone when Urban recruits a three star at other positions is "I trust Urban."  But you don't trust him at the QB position?  What!?  Second, the guy is extremely bright. Pretty much all the truly successful QBs (in the NFL at least) are bright guys.  There have been some that have gotten by on athleticism in college(Vince Young) but did so despite not being very bright, not because of it.  Third, the guy got an invite to the Elite 11 final camp so there must at least be some potential there.  Can't we give the guy the benefit of the doubt until he at least takes a snap?  Finally, this team won a national championship with a semi-athletic, cerebral qb.  How quickly so many forget.
Cut the guy some slack.  If you don't have anything positive to say, you should really try to keep it to yourself.  The guy has been pro-tOSU from the start, represents the school and class very well, and likely reads posts about himself.  Really not fair to treat him different than other recruits that I've heard nearly nothing negative about.
My two cents.

I agree Jax, and don't forget, Collier's mother is 100% Buckeye. Given that the parents and players sometimes come on 11W, we don't need to be pissing her off, especially.

In Collier we (will have to) trust.  Somewhere in the fairly distant future.  We got Brax for at least one, probably two more years, plus Barrett/Cardale.

I like Collier and think he a good fit for the Bucks.  You don't get invited to The Opening by not having talent.  I particularly like his intelligence and enthusiasm for the good guys and believe that he will develop into a very good QB.  Just how good he becomes will be fun to watch.

Peyton Manning couldn't take Tennessee to the Championship game but Tee Martin won it all with way less stuff...Germain and Hoying couldn't get us to the game, but Krenzel won won it all with less talent. Collier doesn't have to be great and could still easily be our Martin or Krenzel.
