Who knew?

How could we possibly predict that Joe Burrow would go on to success? He was only Ohio's Mr. Football, throwing for over 11,000 yards in his high school career and ending up as a solid four-star prospect at Ohio State. Could we at the Eleven Dubcast be truly asked to peer into the future and predict that this young man would be, dare I say it, good? Maybe even very very very very good?

Anyway, that's my tongue-in-cheek way of saying that yeah, we probably should've given Burrow a little more gravitas than we did. Our good friend Michael Citro and I were manning the helm of the Eleven Dubcast back in the salad days of 2014 when we had the future Heisman winner on the show to talk about his Ohio State recruitment.

A quick note: this form of the Dubcast was a little rough compared to what it would eventually grow into, so please excuse some of the wonky audio and pauses; we were using empty cans on a string.

But without further ado, let's set the scene; it's late October of that national championship-winning season, and the Buckeyes were on as much of a tear as Burrow was down in Athens.

Here are a few choice quotes from our short time with a guy who would go on to prove himself as one of the most dangerous dudes in football.

In response to a question about the kind of quarterback he think he'd evolve into in college:

"I would say that I would develop into a thrower, that can run if needed. I can run the occasional zone read, or scramble or get 15 or 20 yards, get a first down. But I would love to stay in the pocket if possible."

In response to a question about his running skills:

"Yeah, I think (people) definitely are [sleeping on my running skills]. I kept hearing from teams in the playoff 'You're a lot quicker than we thought you were.'"

About what appealed to him about Ohio State:

"...Just the opportunity to win national championships. [...] I couldn't turn down a chance to do that 60 minutes from my hometown."

What Ohio State fans should know he excels at as a quarterback:

"I would say the longball. We do that a lot here in Athens."

And in Baton Rouge and now in Cincinnati. The Eleven Dubcast won't attempt to take credit for propelling Burrow to superstardom but we won't be mad if someone gives it to us anyway.

In any event, we thank Joe Burrow for putting up with our questions about seven and a half years ago and we're wishing him the best of luck on Sunday.

Don't forget to listen to the current (and aurally pleasing) version of the Eleven Dubcast, which goes live on your favorite podcast platform every Tuesday afternoon!
