Michigan will likely be without its biggest star for The Game.
Wolverines running back Justice Haynes is “probably” going to miss the rest of the regular season, Michigan coach Sherrone Moore said Monday.
Haynes has been sidelined since suffering a foot injury in Michigan’s Oct. 25 win over Michigan State. 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported on Nov. 2 that Haynes would undergo surgery for the injury.
During FOX’s broadcast of Michigan’s game against Northwestern on Saturday, FOX commentator Gus Johnson said Haynes was out for the season. Moore said that Michigan still hopes to have Haynes back for the postseason, but a return in the regular season is unlikely.
As such, Michigan will likely be without its top runner next week when it hosts Ohio State for the rivalry game between the two teams on Nov. 29 in Ann Arbor.
Michigan has struggled in its last two games without Haynes, battling to one-score victories over Purdue (21-16) and Northwestern (24-22).
The Wolverines’ other top running back, Jordan Marshall, suffered an injury of his own when he landed hard on his shoulder in Saturday’s game at Wrigley Field. Moore said Monday that Marshall is currently day-to-day, but said he is optimistic Marshall will be back for the Ohio State game even if he can’t play against Maryland this week.
“I feel good about where he’s at, but we’ll see. We’ll take it day by day and see where he’s at,” Moore said.
If Marshall is sidelined, Michigan’s top running back would be Bryson Kuzdzal, who’s rushed for just 106 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries this season.
Haynes had 857 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on 121 carries in seven games before his injury. Marshall has 871 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on 143 carries in 10 games this season.
