Welcome to the Skull Session.

Ohio State football posted another A+ video on Monday.

Have a good Tuesday.

MORE SHADE? After Michigan won The Game in 2021, then-head coach Jim Harbaugh gave a brutal assessment of Ohio State head coach Ryan Day. “Some people were born on third base and think they hit a triple,” Harbaugh said, his comment directed at the Buckeyes’ program leader.

Harbaugh seemed to reference those comments this week during an interview at the NFL’s annual league meetings. Now the Los Angeles Chargers head coach, Harbaugh said no coach or player in the Chargers’ building was “born on third base” and has instead “had to work their way to first.”

Like Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, I, too, will make no comment. To be clear, that’s not because I have no comments to make; rather, my comments could get me into trouble, and the Khaki Man is not worth the trouble.

FIRST OF ITS KIND. FOX loves Ohio State. And I mean, it loves Ohio State.

Since the network created its Big Noon Kickoff and Big Noon Saturday production in 2019, Ohio State games have been one of the most, if not the most, frequent destinations for FOX during the fall. Now, however, FOX will not limit its affection for the Buckeyes to fall Saturdays but will also extend it to the spring.

On his most recent episode of “The Joel Klatt Show,” Fox commentator Joel Klatt announced that FOX will broadcast Ohio State’s spring game on April 13 — a game traditionally shown on the Big Ten Network.

That’s correct.

Gus Johnson and Joel Klatt will be in Columbus for the battle between Team Scarlet and Team Gray, a matchup that will serve as Buckeye Nation’s first look at Will Howard, Quinshon Judkins, Will Kacmarek, Seth McLaughlin and Caleb Downs. According to Ohio State football’s X account, the scrimmage will be the first-ever nationally televised spring game on FOX.

For those who plan to attend the spring game, general admission tickets are available for $8. According to an Ohio State football spokesperson, a limited number of reserved seats are still available for $41. Tickets can be purchased on Ticketmaster.

THE FIVE BROTHERS. This past weekend, I learned some Ohio State lore — not Ohio State athletics lore, but THE Ohio State University lore — that I found quite interesting.

It has to do with some trees in the heart of campus.

The trees are known as “a fraternity that lives on the Oval year-round.” Their origin dates back to 1890. In celebration of Arbor Day, Ohio State’s class of 1890 planted an English elm tree in the heart of the Oval. One year later, the Class of 1891 added six more trees, making a collection of seven trunks, branches and leaves that stood out in the otherwise flat, unforested terrain.

Not long after, two of the trees succumbed to lightning strikes.

The survivors came to be known as the “Five Brothers.”

When the trees grew large enough to provide shade, Ohio State placed benches underneath them, providing an excellent spot for students to study or relax with friends. The trees stood strong for close to 80 years before the beetle-spread Dutch elm disease caused their gradual death. By 1972, the school had removed all five from the Oval.

In memory of the "Five Brothers," Ohio Staters Inc. erected a plaque in 1976 about the history and importance of the site where the trees had been. In April 1987, the campus service organization planted five Eastern red oak trees in honor of the University’s 300th commencement. Ohio Staters Inc. dedicated the trees on June 5 on the site where the "Five Brothers" once stood. The site was renamed “Commencement Grove.”

And that’s it.

That’s the lore.

On a related note, I have also heard that there’s a large English oak in the Oval that may have been a gift from Ohio State legend Jesse Owens. Rumor has it Owens received a sapling for each of the gold medals he won in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, and this tree — located between Thompson and Mirror Lake — is said to be one of them.

GOOD BRAND. NICE BRAND. While Eleven Warriors Dry Goods is the premier destination for Ohio State-themed apparel, the second-best destination is Homefield Apparel, a brand based in Indianapolis from which I have purchased too many T-shirts over the past three years.

This week, Homefield announced special edition T-shirts to commemorate Ohio State women's hockey's national championship in 2024. The Buckeyes defeated Wisconsin, 1-0, in the Frozen Four final and avenged their title game loss to the Badgers in 2023.

Joy Dunne scored the game-winner for Ohio State. After two-and-a-half periods of scoreless action, Dunne – the Buckeyes’ leading goal scorer this season – sniped a shot past Wisconsin goaltender Ava McNaughton to put Ohio State in front. In the final seven minutes, the Buckeyes’ defense buried the Badgers, keeping their explosive offense off the board and securing the shutout win.

Ohio State has now won championships in two of the past three seasons, establishing itself as one of women's college hockey's powerhouses along with Wisconsin, Minnesota, Minnesota-Duluth and Clarkson.

Celebrate the beginnings of a potential dynasty with a T-shirt from Homefield, the good brand, today. Use the promo code ELEVENWARRIORS for 15% off your entire order.
