ICYMI

GET DUMPED THEN, NOTRE DAME. I'm not an aging World War II veteran, so I don't remember the last time Notre Dame beat Ohio State in football. That doesn't mean hatred for the Irish doesn't run through my Irish veins.

Notre Dame might not be a rival, but the only time I "cheer" for Michigan is when they play ND.

So yeah, today might not be the 20th anniversary of the Irish getting a Buckeye boot up their ass (that was yesterday), but I'm never going to pass up an opportunity to dwell on one of the high points of the 1990s.

From 247Sports.com:

Ohio State capitalized on several Notre Dame miscues by going on a second-half barrage and rolled past the Fighting Irish 45-26 on Sept. 30 at Ohio Stadium.

The Buckeyes prevailed in just the third-ever game between the two schools steeped in football tradition, and, at the same time, exacted revenge for the school’s 1935 and ’36 teams who dropped consecutive games to Notre Dame. (Several members of the 1935 OSU team were on hand to witness this victory.)

[...]

“Coach Cooper talked about it at the beginning of the game,” said OSU quarterback and co-captain Bobby Hoying, who had four touchdown passes against the Irish. “He said it’s a game you’ll be talking about for the rest of your life. We’re the first Ohio State team to beat Notre Dame.

“It’s just phenomenal. I can’t put it into words. When you’re sitting out there in the fourth quarter and you’ve got the game won, that’s a phenomenal feeling.”

In case you're more of a visual person, here's that game in less than 10 minutes (courtesy of Vico, whom you should all be following on Twitter):

Why drink coffee when you can watch that video every morning?

OH HALE YES. We last saw Joel Hale on the cover of his upcoming mixtape. And while the senior DT hasn't stuffed the stat sheet this year, the big fella is contributing in other ways. So much so that Urban Meyer says he's got a coaching spot waiting for him.

From MyDaytonDailyNews.com:

Hale may be doing that for years to come at Ohio State. He wants to coach when his playing career ends. When he makes that move, Meyer said, a spot awaits him on the staff at Ohio State.

“I think coaching is probably the path I will take after my football career is over,” Hale said. “It’s just when that happens and where the best fit will be. I love this game more than anything. Coach Meyer says I remind him a lot of himself when I was his age. That’s pretty positive to hear, seeing where he’s at now.”

Hale, a fifth-year senior who played in the first four games last season but earned a medical redshirt, gets a second homecoming of sorts Saturday when the No. 1 Buckeyes (4-0) play at Indiana (4-0). Hale grew up in Greenwood, Ind., 44 miles northeast of Bloomington, and attended Center Grove High School.

Meyer doesn't heap that praise on anybody, especially a fifth-year backup defensive tackle. It'd be cool to see Hale make some plays this weekend in front of the home-state crowd. If he does come back to Ohio State to coach, he wouldn't look out of place in tombstoning idiots on the field into the depths of Hell.

THERE'S A NEW DISTRIBUTOR IN TOWN. The Cardale Jones–Devin Smith connection was lit (may it R.I.P.), but Dolo has done a respectable job at spreading the love around (as commanded by Urban Meyer's offense).

Meyer said on Wednesday that Braxton Miller, Curtis Samuel, and Dontre Wilson (remember him?) are three playmakers deserving of more touches. It will be interesting to see if those come in the passing game or more in the jet-sweep, motion-into-the-backfield way. (I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Urban was saving his fancier stuff for the fancier opponents.)

OH, WHAT COULD'VE BEEN. I assume Noah Spence would be in the pros by now if he'd not ran afoul of Big Ten law. It'd either be by choice or because a Joey Bosa/Noah Spence tandem would be illegal at the collegiate level in 2015.

Still, Spence is still out there doing his thing:

I know the circumstances of his acrimonious exit soured some folks on Spence, but I'm cheering for him to get out of his own way and prosper into the dominant athlete we all know he can be. (It'd be a lot easier if this part of his life was a three-minute training montage.)

DINO'S A BOSS. Tim sent this along: A behind-the-scenes look at Michigan State's Tuesday preparation for last Saturday's Central Michigan game.

Can't hate on Dino or what he's built in East Lansing.
