After three scoring free-for-alls Ohio State and Connecticut opted to switch things up on Saturday afternoon. They thrilled fans with a good old fashioned goalie duel. At least for awhile. Until the final frenzy of tit for tat scoring, key penalty kills, and crucial saves we've come to expect from this series.

Scoring by Period 1 2 3 OT Final
No. 17 Ohio State 0 0 1 0 1
Connecticut 0 0 1 0 1

The game began calmly enough. The teams battled through two scoreless periods. OSU edged UConn in shots, 18-16. All together 23 players, 12 Bucks and 11 Huskies, recorded at least one shot on goal. Netminders Sean Romeo and Adam Huska stymied the shooters at every turn.

Buckeye Goal Scorer (Assist) Pd Time
Tanner Laczynski (Janik Moser) 3 9:23

Huska had a close call late in the second period. Tanner Laczynski appeared to give the Scarlet and Gray a 1-0 lead. Upon further review, though, the goal was disallowed due to goaltender interference.

The scoreless duel continued until the 9:23 mark of the third period. Laczynksi put another puck past Huska. This time the tally stuck.

The Buckeye lead was not so permanent. With time winding down UConn’s Jesse Schwartz knotted the game at 1-1. OSU turned a bad situation worse with a late penalty. The Huskies skated almost the final two minutes of the game with a power play.

Ohio State’s penalty killers rose to the occasion and kept Connecticut off the board. The PK unit was stellar all night, thwarting all five of the Huskies’ advantages. (The Bucks’ power play was another story, going 0-for-4 tries.)

Romeo stood tall down the stretch to ensure the game headed to overtime. He came up big in the extra session as well. The Huskies outshot the Bucks 6-2 but the junior netminder kept his net clear and preserved the tie.

Ohio State (6-3-3 overall, 1-3-0-0 B1G) has a week off now before heading up to Michigan for a series against the Wolverines. Games are slated for Friday and Saturday evenings. I hear the schools tangle in another sport that week as well.
