Ohio State’s wide receiver snap counts looked very different than usual for the second week in a row.

With Carnell Tate out for his third straight game and Jeremiah Smith sidelined after playing just three drives against UCLA, Brandon Inniss played for the most snaps among wide receivers – a career-high 53 – for the second consecutive week. More surprisingly, David Adolph played the second-most snaps of any wideout, playing a career-high 48 snaps – 12 more than he played in Ohio State’s first 10 games of the season combined – in Ohio State’s 42-9 win over Rutgers.

On the other side of the ball, Bryce West played the biggest role of his Ohio State career to date as he was called upon to play 27 snaps at nickel after Lorenzo Styles Jr. left the game early in the second quarter with an apparent shoulder injury.

25 Buckeyes played on offense and another 25 Buckeyes played on defense against Rutgers as Ohio State got its backups in the game after taking a 35-3 lead early in the fourth quarter. 12 other Buckeyes played on special teams only.

Below, we’ve compiled the snap counts for every position group and special teams unit from Ohio State’s penultimate game of the regular season. All snap counts are courtesy of Pro Football Focus, followed by additional information from what we saw on how the Buckeyes split up playing time in each position group.

Quarterbacks

Julian Sayin: 52
Lincoln Kienholz: 12

Kienholz played his second-highest snap count of the season as he mixed in with the first-team offense more than he had in any previous game this year. Kienholz was brought in for one play to throw the ball multiple times, then split a drive with Sayin behind the first-team offensive line, running the ball three times for 37 yards. Kienholz also led Ohio State’s final two drives on offense behind the second-team offensive line.

Sayin played his third-lowest snap count of the season and tied his season-lows with just 13 completions and 19 passing attempts, which went for 157 yards and two touchdowns.

Running Backs

Bo Jackson: 27
CJ Donaldson: 15
Isaiah West: 14
James Peoples: 12

Jackson played just under half of Ohio State’s offensive snaps against Rutgers and had his most rushing attempts yet (19), turning them into 110 yards and his first two-touchdown game as a Buckeye.

Donaldson returned to action after missing the UCLA game and played the second-most snaps among running backs, though he was the fourth RB to enter the game after West and Peoples. West had the second-most carries against Rutgers, gaining 48 yards on eight carries; Peoples and Donaldson each had only three carries, but both ran for touchdowns, with Peoples scoring from 49 yards out.

Wide Receivers

Brandon Inniss: 53
David Adolph: 48
Bryson Rodgers: 23
Mylan Graham: 12

Inniss and Adolph both played career-high snap counts – with Adolph playing 12 more offensive snaps than he did in Ohio State’s first 10 games of the season combined – as the Buckeyes’ top two receivers against Rutgers with Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate sidelined. They were the only wide receivers to catch passes against Rutgers; Adolph had two catches for 23 yards, while Inniss had two catches for 10 yards and a touchdown.

Rodgers made his first career start alongside Inniss and Adolph, but played fewer snaps than he did in each of Ohio State’s prior two games.

Graham, the only other receiver to see action against Rutgers, did not play until the second half and played just 12 total snaps after playing 42 snaps against UCLA. Asked about Graham’s lack of playing time after the game, Ryan Day said the Buckeyes “want him to be consistent and do his job, and we're challenging him to do that and step up in a big way.”

Tight Ends

Max Klare: 40
Bennett Christian: 32
Nate Roberts: 23
Jelani Thurman: 11
Will Kacmarek: 7

Klare played 40-plus snaps for the third game in a row and had his best game yet as a Buckeye, catching seven passes for 105 yards and a touchdown.

Christian played a career-high 32 snaps as Ohio State’s No. 2 TE as Kacmarek – who had led Ohio State tight ends in playing time for the season until Saturday – saw limited action, presumably for precautionary reasons, for the second week in a row.

Roberts played his second-highest snap count of the season against Rutgers.

Offensive Linemen

Austin Siereveld: 58
Carson Hinzman: 58
Phillip Daniels: 58
Luke Montgomery: 57
Tegra Tshabola: 48
Gabe VanSickle: 16
Justin Terry: 9
Ethan Onianwa: 7
Isaiah Kema: 6
Ian Moore: 6
Deontae Armstrong: Special teams only

After VanSickle played more snaps than Tshabola at right guard against UCLA, Tshabola went back to playing the majority of snaps – 75% of Ohio State’s offensive plays, to be exact – against Rutgers, as VanSickle took his place for just two drives with the first-team offense.

Montgomery had to leave the game for one play after his helmet came off and was replaced at left guard by Onianwa, who was called for holding on 2nd-and-goal at the 1-yard line on his lone play with the first-team offense. Montgomery played every other play with the first-team offensive line alongside Siereveld at left tackle, Hinzman at center and Daniels at right tackle.

The offensive line for the Buckeyes’ final two possessions of the game consisted of Moore at left tackle, Onianwa at left guard, Kema at center, VanSickle at right guard and Terry at right tackle. Terry also played three additional snaps as a sixth offensive lineman in the Bison package, just as he did against Purdue.

Joshua Padilla did not play for a third straight game even though he was available after being listed as unavailable for Ohio State’s previous two games due to injury.

Defensive Ends

Caden Curry: 42
Kenyatta Jackson Jr.: 40
Zion Grady: 16
Beau Atkinson: 12
Joshua Mickens: 4

Ohio State continued to lean primarily on its top two defensive ends to play the vast majority of snaps with the first-team defense. Curry led the Buckeyes with six tackles, including two sacks and a forced fumble that he recovered himself, while Jackson had two tackles in his fourth 40-snap game of the year.

Grady played the third-most snaps among defensive ends for the third straight game as he was the first DE off the bench before Atkinson. Both made one tackle against Rutgers.

Mickens played his only snaps of the game on Rutgers’ final drive in his eighth game appearance of the season.

Defensive Tackles

Eddrick Houston: 34
Kayden McDonald: 30
Will Smith Jr.: 27
Tywone Malone Jr.: 22
Jason Moore: 9

After rotating with Malone at 3-technique for most of the game, Houston finished out the game lining up at defensive end, the position he was initially recruited to play at Ohio State before moving to tackle midway through his freshman season. Houston played his second-highest snap count of the season as a result and recorded 1.5 tackles for loss (both of which came as a DT).

Smith also played his second-highest snap count of the season as he played just three fewer snaps than McDonald in Ohio State’s nose tackle rotation. Both of them made three tackles against the Scarlet Knights.

Malone made his eighth start of the season at 3-technique and recorded three tackles. Moore also mixed in at 3-technique but did not record any statistics.

Linebackers

Arvell Reese: 44
Sonny Styles: 44
Payton Pierce: 22
TJ Alford: 9
Riley Pettijohn: 8
Garrett Stover: Special teams only
Joey Velazquez: Special teams only

Styles and Reese both played every snap until Rutgers’ final two possessions of the game. Styles made five tackles with a pass breakup and a half-sack while Reese had one tackle against the Scarlet Knights.

Pierce mixed in for at least 20 snaps for the ninth time in 11 games – and the seventh game in a row – and also recorded five tackles.

In a change from previous games, Alford was the second linebacker off the bench after Pierce, though he only played one more snap than fellow freshman Pettijohn, who has been Ohio State’s No. 4 LB for the rest of the season. Both freshmen saw their playing time late in the game, with Pettijohn recording his first career tackle for loss.

Cornerbacks

Jermaine Mathews Jr.: 54
Davison Igbinosun: 44
Bryce West: 27
Devin Sanchez: 25
Aaron Scott Jr.: 6
Brenten “Inky” Jones: Special teams only
Miles Lockhart: Special teams only
Jordyn Woods: Special teams only

Mathews tied for the most snaps of any Ohio State defender vs. Rutgers as he stayed in the game until the Scarlet Knights’ final possession, when he was replaced by Scott. Both of them recorded one tackle, with Scott’s tackle coming in kickoff coverage.

Igbinosun came out of the game one series earlier than Mathews as he was replaced by Sanchez for Rutgers’ final two drives. Sanchez also played some first-team snaps earlier in the game as a sixth defensive back in dime packages and as an outside cornerback when Mathews kicked inside to play nickel.

West played a career-high 27 snaps as he played most of the snaps at nickel for the rest of the game after Lorenzo Styles Jr. exited early in the second quarter with an apparent shoulder injury. He recorded two tackles.

Safeties

Jaylen McClain: 54
Caleb Downs: 44
Leroy Roker III: 19
Lorenzo Styles Jr.: 18
Faheem Delane: 6
Keenan Nelson Jr.: Special teams only
Ryan Rudzinski: Special teams only

Like Mathews, McClain played every snap until Rutgers’ final possession of the game. He recorded four tackles, including a 4th-and-1 stop with Curry in the first quarter.

Downs played every snap until Rutgers’ final two possessions of the game. He recorded three tackles with one sack.

Roker finished the game out at free safety after Downs’ day was done and played three additional snaps as a sixth defensive back in dime packages after Styles – who started the game at nickel and played 18 snaps before his injury – left the game. Roker recorded two tackles.

Delane replaced McClain at strong safety on Rutgers’ final drive and recorded three tackles in just six defensive snaps.

Gabe VanSickle: 6
John Ferlmann (long snapper): 5
Luke Montgomery: 5
Deontae Armstrong: 1
Collin Johnson (long snapper): 1

Fielding didn’t attempt any field goals against Rutgers but made all six of his extra points in his final home game as a Buckeye. Johnson, who was also celebrating Senior Day on Saturday, made his second game appearance of the season as he replaced fellow senior Ferlmann at long snapper for the Buckeyes’ final point after touchdown.

Armstrong made his special teams debut as he replaced Montgomery in the lineup on Ohio State’s final extra point.

Six of Fielding’s seven kickoffs went for touchbacks or fair catches, with Scott and Delane combining for a tackle on Rutgers’ only kickoff return of the game.

Woods was on the coverage team on Ohio State’s final kickoff for the second week in a row for his second snap and game appearance of his freshman year.

Kickoff Returns

Miles Lockhart: 3
Riley Pettijohn: 3
Payton Pierce: 3
Nate Roberts: 3

Ohio State’s lone kickoff return attempt came on the opening play of the second half, when Inniss attempted to execute a trick play by throwing the ball across the field to Peoples. While Peoples appeared to have room for a long return – potentially a touchdown – if Inniss’ lateral had been accurate, Inniss’ throw went behind Peoples; Peoples was able to recover the ball but was tackled at Ohio State’s own 7-yard line.
