Former Ohio State long snapper Roen McCullough is no longer playing football.

McCullough announced in a statement on Thursday that he has medically retired from football after undergoing shoulder surgery this summer. He also revealed that he was diagnosed with a heart condition late last year, though he had been cleared to play for the Buckeyes this spring.

The younger brother of former Ohio State long snapper Liam McCullough, Roen McCullough was viewed as his brother's likely successor when he joined the Buckeyes as a walk-on in 2018. But he never appeared in a regular-season game at long snapper and was set to remain a backup this year, with sixth-year senior Bradley Robinson returning for a second season as the Buckeyes' top long snapper.

Max Lomonico, a freshman walk-on from Pickerington Central High School, is now the only other long snapper on the roster.

McCullough's most memorable moment as a Buckeye came in this year's spring game, when he played linebacker due to a lack of available players at this position and performed well, recording four tackles and a pass breakup. Prior to his injury this summer, which he suffered while working away from the football field, McCullough was training to continue playing linebacker this season. However, he's now decided it's in his best interest to move on from the sport.

Bucknuts' Dave Biddle was first to report McCullough's departure from the team.
