Cardale Jones survived the Chargers’ initial Saturday cuts to reach the 53-man roster limit, but he will not be with the team to start the season, as he was waived by the team on Sunday.

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com was the first to report the news.

Jones was locked in a preseason battle for the backup quarterback spot with veteran and one-time NFL starting quarterback Geno Smith. Smith ultimately won that battle, as the Chargers elected to keep him on the roster over Jones.

It’s been a tough weekend for the famed 2014 Buckeye quarterbacks as Braxton Miller and J.T. Barrett were both cut from their respective NFL rosters this weekend as well, among other former Ohio State players.
