In a move that typically splits the fanbase between hardcore traditionalists and those who favor a more modern look, Ohio State has worn an alternate uniform every season since 2009 as part of its contract with Nike.

The Buckeyes have been outfitted in everything from all-black uniforms to throwbacks honoring past national championship teams and the first three-time All-American in program history, but there's no denying a fan favorite was the Rivalry set (2012-14), which featured a chrome helmet with an oversized helmet stripe and reflective helmet stickers.

Naturally, Ohio State and its apparel partners are trying to capitalize on that, which is why they'll release a chrome version of the standard helmet on Aug. 20.

A source at Riddell — the leading manufacturer in football helmets and pads with a plant in North Ridgeville — told Eleven Warriors the chrome helmets are nothing more than a special mini helmet release for NFL and select NCAA teams.

It is priced at $39.99 and can be purchased at Fanatics and other Ohio State retailers. Chrome helmets are also available for Alabama, Arizona State, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Louisville, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Purdue, South Carolina, Texas and USC — though the Boilermakers, Cardinals, Spartans and Trojans have worn this style on the field in the past.

Ohio State has not announced its alternate uniforms for this season, but stay tuned to Eleven Warriors for the latest (since we typically break the news).
