The future stars of Ohio State football officially begin their college careers, as standouts from all over the country put pens to their National Letters of Intent.

Sammamish, Washington wideout Gee Scott Jr. emerged as one of the early top targets during Brian Hartline's first year as receivers coach. The four-star wideout has seen his stock steadily rise throughout the recruiting process; a process that basically came to an end on Christmas Day of 2018.

The Scott Jr. File

  • Class: 2020
  • Size: 6-foot-2.5, 207 pounds
  • Pos: WR
  • School: Eastside Catholic (Sammamish, Washington)
  • Composite Rating: ★★★★
  • Composite Rank: 12 (WR)

The talented West Coast wideout was being courted by the likes of Ohio State, Notre Dame, LSU, and a number of other national powers. But it was the Buckeyes that secured his pledge last holiday season.

Leading up to the commitment, it was the Irish that appeared to be the biggest threat. Scott Jr. had made unofficial trips to Notre Dame, Florida, and Oregon. But it was an October trip to Columbus that helped to set the stage for his commitment.

At the time, Scott became the sixth commitment for the Buckeyes, and it came just a few weeks after Urban Meyer announced that he would retire following the 2018 season. Brian Hartline had put in plenty of work in the recruitment and was clearly the pivotal figure in helping to seal the deal.

Scott became the second wide receiver pledge as he joined Texas star Jaxon Smith-Njigba at the time of his announcement. He was the nation's No. 70 overall prospect at the time but has since shot up to No. 62 in the composite. According to 247 Sports rankings, he's listed at No.26 overall, putting him firmly in the mix for a fifth star.

At nearly 6-foot-3 and over 200 pounds, he's already a physically gifted prospect and has a college-ready body. He clocked in with a 4.6-second forty last July, which is nothing to scoff at for a player with his size. Scott has superb body control, excellent hands, and is a precise route-runner.

On a more personal level, Scott and his father have formed a special bond with a local homeless man who just so happens to be a Toledo native and is die-hard Buckeye fan. Jerry and Gee have now gotten together on several occasions as he became a regular at Eastside Catholic's games.

“Gee’s got a really big heart. He's always had a really big heart,” his Gee Sr. said. “(This experience) is really important because my son, like me, we’ve never really had a relationship with someone who’s homeless so you really ask yourself, ‘why not?’”

Since his commitment, Hartline has added two more wideouts in five-star Julian Fleming and four-star slot Mookie Cooper. All four of the Buckeyes' prized receivers are planning to enroll in January, and that will provide a much-needed boost to Hartline's room.

K.J. Hill, Austin Mack, and Binjimen Victor are all gone following the 2019 season, and there's going to be plenty of opportunity for early playing time. Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson will be starting next year, but the expectation is that Gee Scott and the other 2020 signees see the field as true freshmen.

Brian Hartline landed one of his top targets very early in the process, and Scott's physicality and excellent route running should lead to early playing time next season. Arriving on campus as a January enrollee should only help his cause even further.
