Distance Not a Factor for 2017 Five-Star Cornerback Darnay Holmes

It is nearly 2,300 miles from Calabasas, California to Columbus, Ohio, but Darnay Holmes has made the trip on more than one occasion. There is a pretty simple explanation for this.

Ohio State is intriguing to the five-star prospect in the 2017 class.

“Distance doesn’t matter for me and my family thinks it’s a great school so I keep coming back to see how the school fits me,” Holmes said following Friday Night Lights. “It fits me pretty well, and I’m going to take my time with my decision.”

The Buckeyes will gladly wait even though they are far from the favorite to land Holmes. He’s certainly worth holding out hope for.

Rated as the No. 11 overall player in the 2017 class and the No. 2-ranked cornerback, Holmes has offers from just about every major college football program in the country. Most believe he’ll wind up at either UCLA, Nebraska or Stanford, but there’s something about Ohio State that continues to bring him back every summer.

Buckeyes cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs is certainly part of that, as is the rest of the Ohio State coaching staff.

“It’s a close relationship; I talk to [Coombs] pretty frequently and Coach Meyer and Coach Greg [Schiano],” Holmes said. “They know what I’m about and I know what they’re about so they’re great people.”

Holmes got plenty of face time with the staff while at Friday Night Lights and he certainly drew some attention from other Ohio State commits and targets, as well. The Buckeyes currently have the No. 1-ranked recruiting class in 2017 and they’re certainly trying to add a player like Holmes.

“I would like to play with the best,” Holmes said. “They have a great class being built so they’re going to do a lot of recruiting for me and Tate [Martell] is going to be on my tail, Trevon [Grimes] is going to be on my tail.

“A lot of guys are going to be on my tail.”

Holmes is in no rush to make a decision and said he fully intends to make a return trip to Ohio State for an official visit, though he’s not quite sure which game just yet.

Another 4,600-mile round-trip is in the near future, but that's hardly an issue.

“Distance is nothing to me,” he said. “I’ve been traveling since I was a kid so distance is just distance.”
