Buckeye excellence is not exclusive to the football field or the basketball court. Around the Oval is our way of keeping you informed of the amazing things happening with the other 34 varsity sports on campus.

Women's Rowing Competes in Big Ten/ACC Dual

Ohio State went up against Duke, Syracuse, and Virginia in the Big Ten/ACC Dual on Saturday, winning four races.

The First Varsity Eight team of Anjali Fernandes, Leonie Heuer, Alessandra Montesano, Jessy Vermeer, Ida Petersen, Meg Cymanski, Sierra Cydrus, Sierra Tiede, and Grace Libben kicked off the first session with a first-place finish and a time of 6:32.1. The First Novice Eight also won their race, crossing the finish line after 6:49.6. The Second Varsity Eight, First Varsity Four, and Second Varsity Four all finished in second in their respective races. In the second session, the First Varsity Eight and First Novice Eight came in first once again.

The Buckeyes will stay in Columbus next Saturday as they host the Spartans and the Wolverines of Michigan.

Tennis Teams Go Undefeated

Both tennis teams were in action this week and went undefeated in the process. The women's team, ranked No. 21 in the nation, stayed home for the week, hosting Wisconsin and Minnesota. The men, ranked No. 1 in the country, traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska, to take on the Cornhuskers and Iowa City for a matchup with the Hawkeyes.

The women's team handed the Badgers their first conference loss of the season on Friday, winning 6-1. No. 60 Isabelle Boulais, No. 71 Kolie Allen, No. 72 Shiori Fukuda, Danielle Wolf, and Mary Beth Hurley all secured singles points for the Buckeyes. Luna Dormet and Fukuda won a close doubles match 7-5 while Wolf and Boulais cruised to a 6-2 victory.

Yesterday, the Buckeyes played the Gophers, winning 5-2 to improve to 17-3. Boulais, Fukuda, Wolf, and Dormet contributed four points with their wins in the singles. Ohio State owned the doubles matches once again, with Dormet/Fukuda and Wolf/Boulais taking their sets.

The men's visit to Nebraska ended in a 6-1 victory for the Buckeyes, who are now 21-2 on the year. J.J. Wolf dropped just one game in three sets of action, earning the Bucks a singles point and assisting with the doubles. No. 24 John McNally, No. 68 Kyle Seelig, No. 111 James Trotter, and Alex Kobelt also contributed singles points for Ohio State. The duo of John McNally and Hunter Tubert won their doubles match.

The men's continued their dominant conference play with a 4-1 victory over No. 48 Iowa. Ohio State looked to be in a bad position for the early part of the match, falling behind in two doubles matches before mounting a comeback. Wolf McNally finished their matches in two sets, but Iowa pushed the other three matches into a third set. Eventually, it was Hunter Tubert that put the Bucks over the top, securing their 22nd win.

The women's team will host Purdue next on Friday. The men will travel to Evanston, Illinois, to take on Northwestern on the same day.

Baseball Drops Four

The Buckeyes had a rough outing last week, dropping a match to in-state rival Cincinnati and a three-game series at the hands of Rutgers. Ohio State did not manage more than five runs in any of those games.

The first game of the week saw a 9-5 loss to the Bearcats on Wednesday. The game started poorly as Cincinnati jumped out to a 6-0 lead on just two hits. The Bucks battled back, hitting an RBI-double and sac-fly to drive in three runs. The Bearcats would not be denied, however, batting three more runners in by the seventh inning. Ohio State added two more in the eighth but could not overcome the early deficit.

The Bucks lost three games against Northwestern, the first of which came on Friday. Ohio State managed 10 hits but left seven men on base, scoring just five times. A poor defensive outing that included four errors and four strikeouts ended in a 13-5 defeat for the home team.

The two teams played again on Saturday with the Wildcats taking a 7-2 decision over the Buckeyes. Ohio State played much better defensively but could not get runners home, leaving 13 men on base.

The Bucks could not avoid the sweep yesterday, falling to 16-16 on the season. Griffan Smith pitched six innings and allowed only one run, giving the home team a 3-1 advantage heading into the seventh inning. Northwestern took advantage of Ohio State's bullpen, however, bullying them for nine earned runs in the last three innings. The Buckeyes could not keep up, falling 10-4. Dominic Canzone extended his on-base streak to 28 games, the longest such streak in school history.

Ohio State will travel to Athens tomorrow to take on Ohio University.
