Ohio State excellence is not exclusive to the football field or the basketball court. Around the Oval is our way of keeping you informed of the amazing things happening with the other 34 varsity sports on campus.

women's soccer defeats iowa with a hat trick

After a loss to No. 10 Nebraska and the injury of senior goalie Jillian McVicker last Sunday at Minnesota, the Buckeyes came back with an impressive victory over Iowa this weekend. Ohio State dominated the Hawkeyes 3-0, thanks to a hat trick from senior forward Lindsay Agnew, her first ever for the Buckeyes. After the last week of play, the team now stands at 7-1-4 for the year.

Ohio State went scoreless in the first half despite many attempts from Nichelle Prince and Agnew. Agnew  scored her first goal of the night, off of an assist from Nikki Walts, at the beginning of the second half, at the 49 minute mark. The powerful pair, Prince and Agnew, finally connected for a goal only two minutes later. Just two minutes after that Agnew scored her third goal of the night, this time off of a midfield pass from Sammy Edwards. Within a four minute tim frame, Agnew scored three goals and all of Ohio State's points for the entire. After the hat trick against Iowa, Agnew, a Dublin, Ohio native, now has eight goals for the season, which makes her tied for second in scoring in the Big Ten.

First time starting goalie Megan Geldernick made two saves and Devon Kerr replaced her towards the end of the game to make two more saves. Usually starting at the goal for the Buckeyes is redshirt senior, Jillian McVicker. McVicker had a career-ending collision in the game against Minnesota which resulted in a lacerated kidney, a punctured lung, and a broken rib. She's pretty much the toughest Buckeye we know and is cheering on her team from her hospital room in Minnesota.

Men's soccer Triumphs over valparaiso, falls to bgsu

Ohio State men's soccer had an up and down week, winning big over Valparaiso, but then falling to in-state opponent, Bowling Green.

Ohio State defeated Valparaiso 4-1 on Wednesday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, due to a hat trick from senior forward Danny Jensen, his first ever for the Buckeyes. Jensen scored his first goal of the game at just the fifth minute mark off of an assist from Abdi Mohamed. Jensen scored his second shortly after at the eight minute mark off of a midfield pass from Christian Soldat. After the half, Jensen scored his third goal to secure the hat trick and an Ohio State victory. Nate Kohl, a Hilliard, Ohio native, also scored for the Buckeyes, his third goal of the season.

The team then traveled to Bowling Green on Saturday and fell 2-0, making the Buckeyes 3-6 overall for the season. Next, Ohio State will take on SIUE at home on Wednesday.

women's volleyball drops b1G Openers

Big Ten play has officially begun for the Ohio State women's volleyball team, which means an uphill climb for the Buckeyes the rest of the season. In just the first two conference match-ups, Ohio State faced the No. 2 and No. 3 teams in the nation.

The No. 17 Buckeyes lost to the No. 3 Wisconsin Badgers in just three sets. In the three sets verse Wisconsin, Valeria Leon added 17 more digs to her career list which now totals 1,450. Sophomores Taylor Hughes and Audra Appold showed up for the Buckeyes, Hughes with 13 kills and 28 assists and Appold with 10 kills of her own.

Ohio State battled with No. 2 Minnesota for four sets, but couldn't pull off the win. Leon had an impressive 22 digs. Freshman Madison Smeathers led the team with eight kills, Appold coming in close behind with seven.

But that's not the only thing the women's volleyball team did when they were in Minnesota. They also stopped by the hospital to support their fellow Buckeye, Jillian McVicker.

The Big Ten is the toughest conference in college volleyball and Ohio State is a part of what makes the conference so strong. The team will have already played some of the best teams in the country once the tournament rolls around and they will be more than prepared. Next, the team will come home to St. John's Arena this Wednesday to take on Northwestern.
