I loosely follow the NFL combine each year to check in on Buckeyes and guys I want the Bengals to draft but never do. I've noticed the lower participation in on the field events in recent years, but this year it really seemed to stick out to me. So many guys go there, and just decide not to do certain drills. Some guys don't do any drills. Where's the competitiveness? Where's the confidence to go prove yourself? Lot's of these guys skipping are Day 3 picks anyways, shouldn't you be looking to boost your stock?
As an example, 21 running backs are listed on NFL's website as being at the combine. Out of those 21:
- Only 10 ran the 40 yard dash
- Only 10 did the vertical
- Only 4 did the shuttle
- Only 1!!!! did the 3 cone
I realize a big part of the combine is the interview portion. But the on the field testing results are important too. Guys just want hit a few events they're good at and skip the rest. I think it hurts the draft evaluation process. If the NFL doesn't address it, you can be sure that skipping drills/tests will continue to become more common.
Personally I think it's pretty simple. Barring injury that doesn't allow you to compete, if you accept the invite to the Combine, you have to participate in each drill. You're either in or you're out. No attending for the interviews, running a drill you like and skipping the rest. Come show us why you deserve to be drafted, or just shy away from the opportunity. I think that it will provide the Franchises a much clearer picture of who they should be drafting and not drafting.
