It remains to be seen whether Dwayne Haskins will start a game for the Redskins this season, but another former Ohio State star quarterback will take the QB1 reins for the D.C. Defenders, Washington’s XFL team, when the reborn league kicks off in February.
The XFL on Tuesday announced that Cardale Jones, who led the Buckeyes to the college football national championship in 2015, was one of eight quarterbacks assigned to each of the league’s eight teams ahead of the player draft, which will be held over the next two days.
“I felt like it was finally a chance for me to take my career into my own hands,” Jones, 27, said in a phone interview of his decision to join the XFL after being released by the Seahawks last month. “It’s an opportunity to go somewhere and be ‘the guy,’ instead of being on someone’s practice squad, and continuing to take the most reps, which are very important to a quarterback’s development.”
