Hadn't watched that game in a long time and wanted to do so prior to this match up with The U. My 17 y/o had never watched all of it, so I forced him to watch with me. Here were my take-aways.
I DO NOT MISS DAN FOUTS!!! His voice grates on my nerves, and his "color" commentary was often either self-serving braggadocio or just complete Captain Obvious stuff that seemed unnecessary.
Keith Jackson was clearly nearing the end of his fantastic career. He missed several plays where he would "see ghosts" and then gently transition into a correction of his error. He did so pretty smoothly and with his iconic voice, so it still worked. One thing I did notice was his obsession with player's weights. I would wager that he mentioned a players' weight on 1/3 of his comments during the game. It was funny and very noticeable. Yes Keith, football players are big dudes, we get it.
The graphics were embarrassingly awful. There was this "laser noise" that they used when showing stats.......it was just terrible. I guess 2003 is as close to 1980 as it is to today, but I was surprised at how bad the technology of the broadcast was. It was so much more 1980 than 2025.
Matt Wilhelm, Kenny Peterson, Will Smith and Will Allen were beasts. MIke Doss was as well, of course. What a stud. I had forgotten how impactful Wilhelm was.
Krenzel was the gamer of all gamers, but man his throwing motion and passing limitations were glaringly bad. Dude made plays though. He willed that team to victory.
As much as he was targeted, Kellen Winslow Jr. was probably UNDER-utilized. Cie Grant played a good game overall but had no chance against Winslow. He had 10 or 11 catches and probably could have had 20. He was a freak.
I can't watch McGahee's knee injury. I knew when it was coming and looked away. My son, watched it live and all of the replays too. I can't believe they didn't cart him off the field. They had him get up and walk off the field with help. Nuts!!!
Sadly, I found myself telling my son "that guy passed away" more times than I expected. 23 years is a long time I suppose, but it seemed like death was a noticeable undertone of the re-watch. Keith Jackson, Will Smith, Nick Mangold, Shane Olivea, Mike Kudla, Ivan Douglas, and I'm sure more. RIP gents.
Still got chills at the end. Such a great victory!!
