Play calling is "the magic sauce" of offensive football. It accounts for several variables and is almost always the primary complaint when a team loses a game in which they don't score a bunch of points. I think sometimes that's a knee-jerk overreaction by us, but it's worth investigating.
Let's look at how the game was called against IU.
First drive, 4 plays for 17 yards, 3 passes/1 run, 1 first down. Sayin throws an INT on 3 and 6 trying to squeeze a ball into a very tight window
Score is 0-3
Second drive, 6 plays for 25 yards, 4 passes/2 runs, 2 first downs. Sayin gets sacked on 3rd and 3, team punts
Buckeyes get a short field with an INT on IU 25
Third drive, 4 plays for 25 yards and a TD, 2 passes/2 runs, 1 first down by penalty. Sayin throws 9 yard TD pass to Tate on 2nd and 9
Score is 7-3
Fourth drive, 6 plays for 67 yards and a FG, 2 passes/3 runs/1 FG conversion, 1 first down. Sayin sacked on 3rd and 6 forcing FG attempt
Score 10-6
Fifth drive, 4 plays for 13 yards, 3 passes/1 run, 1 first down, Sayin is sacked again and throws incomplete pass on 3rd and 8, team punts
First Half Stats, 24 plays, 14 passes/9 runs/1 FG attempt, 6 first downs for 147 yards
Sixth drive, 5 plays for 11 yards, 4 passes/1 run, 1 first down, 2 sacks set Bucks back on this drive, team punts
Score 10-13
Seventh drive, 12 plays for 70 yards, 6 passes/6 runs, 4 first downs, move the ball down the field well, Sayin fails on QB sneak
Eighth drive, 15 plays for 81 yards, 8 passes/6 runs/1 FG attempt, 4 first downs, we know what happened, this drive included a pass from Brandon Inniss to Bo Jackson
Ninth drive, desperation, 3 passes for 47 yards, 1 first down, game over
Second Half Stats, 35 plays, 21 passes/13 runs/1FG attempt, 10 first downs, 209 yards
Total Game Plays, 59 plays, 35 passes/22 runs/2 FG attempts, 16 first downs
