Tressels, Fickells, Urbans, Days, Johnsons and Days,
It felt strange even typing the subject of this email.
This is the 23rd year of this weekly in-season tradition for me. I've typed "OSU vs. Illinois" since Maurice Hall scored the game winner in overtime. I've typed "OSU vs. Purdue" since Holy Buckeye. I've typed "OSU vs. Michigan" since Will Allen intercepted Chad Henne at the goal line. I've typed "OSU vs. Penn State" since Chris Gamble weaved to score the game's only touchdown. Even typing "OSU vs. Nebraska" has become a fairly traditional occurrence...and was a welcome addition with Nebraska as one of college football's historical programs. Mediocre football today, but still great fans.
But, it feels really awkward typing "OSU vs UCLA." Most of the games they have played against each other occurred before October 1980.
Top songs of October 1980 are very fitting for this week's match up:
- Another One Bites the Dust, Queen
- I'm Alright, Kenny Loggins
- Fame, Irene Cara
- Whip It, Devo
Your inner voice soundtrack will haunt you now; it's gonna live forever.
Welcome to the final stretch of the Big Ten season? It feels like a brief November out-of-conference interruption with UCLA coming to town this Saturday followed by Rutgers the next week. The new coast-to-coast B1G football expanse meeting here at the conference epicenter.
The four most intriguing aspects to the OSU-UCLA match-up this weekend:
1) The UCLA QB who played in Ohio Stadium with another team as part of the CFP last December, and finished the game wearing a different helmet thanks to Cody Simon. (Cue "Whip It")
2) Which OSU stars will selectively play less snaps and what the Buckeyes will work on during the live scrimmage (Cue "I'm Alright")
3) If both Julian and Jeremiah can continue to make in-roads to finish first and second in the Heisman voting (Cue "Fame")
4) If the OSU stadium speakers actually play Freddie Mercury as the game wraps up late Saturday night (Cue - well, you get it already)
Hard Rock Stadium in Miami is the spot for the final college football game this season. I would love to type "OSU vs" six more times.
Touchdowns: Jeremiah Smith, Jeremiah Smith, Brandon Inniss, Max Klare, Bo Jackson, CJ Donaldson
OSU 45 UCLA 6
Go Bucks! Beat UCLA! Harry Miller and Eddrick Houston for Heisman!
