Believe it or not, the next time OSU takes the field, it will be during the "most important month in football". Now while the playoff has maybe changed the long-term belief of peaking during early November, there is no doubt that OSU's staff is going to want to come out of this Bye Week looking like the team that will be taking the field on the last Saturday of the month and then December/January.
Personally, I think this Bye Week falls at the perfect time, as the staff has an ample sample size of what is working, what needs fine tuned, or what needs completely blown up. Here is what I think we will see come November 1.
- Padilla starts at RG. Proof is in the pudding. He is simply better than Tegra by any metric or eye test you use. Bye Week gives them the chance to get 2 weeks of work in. IMO, the fact that Padilla has been getting increasing reps, leads me to believe the staff has been planning for a full changeover coming out of this Bye Week.
- Graham rotates in more, and Tate rotates at the slot - A lot of Buckeye fans have been clamoring for Graham or Porter to play more over Inniss. I think that happens, but not in the way you expect. IMO, OSU will start moving Tate to the slot WR position while Graham rotates in on the outside. 2-high safety looks have been giving us fits in obvious passing downs this season, because we have not attacked the deep middle. I like Inniss, but it is clear he isn't a guy that can attack this area of the field. Tate can, and in fact did, in his spur of the moment move to the slot after Inniss went down. This would also not be a move uncommon for Day, as he moved Wilson to the slot WR role in 2020 to create matchup nightmares by having his two best WR's on the same side of the field. As a note, I don't expect this to be the majority of the time, but more of specific packages on obvious passing situations.
- Klare's roll diminishes - Klare just isn't good at blocking folks, and it is killing us. 12 personnel doesn't work with him in the game, because the defense doesn't have to get heavier to matchup, and relying on him to chip/block in 11 personnel can't be trusted. IMO, Will K plays more snaps in November. Klare had some catches against Wisconsin, but let's be honest. Were any of his catches anything that Will K couldn't have done?
What changes, if any, do you expect to see as the season gets down to the nitty gritty?
