Atmosphere:
I have to say, bravo OSU. Yes the Caamp song isn't great, but every other change was great (this was my first game since Marshall last year).
- The speaker upgrades are fantastic. Sitting in 25C, I actually could barely hold a conversation with my wife during the majority of the warmups. It was blaring
- Getting rid of the commercial break sponsor filled snooze-fest = Job well done. Stadium was engaged throughout
- WIFI definitely is better than I can ever remember. Was even able to FaceTime during Script Ohio
- War Pigs and Hells Bells as the intro is another great change. Only thing that is a little weird is that the band still plays. So you get a weird blend of AC/DC screaming in your ears, with a few trumpet notes of Across the Field.
- OSU and OU bands joining together at halftime was maybe the best part of the entire game. Brutus and Rufus "making up" to Chicago was hilarious.
Game itself:
- Even at 13-9, I was never panicking. I think being at the game made it even more apparent to how bad we were kicking OU's ass.
- Sayin doesn't look to Inniss at all. On 2 redzone occasions, Inniss was wide open for a touchdown, but Sayin never left Jeremiah's side of the field. Sayin will get more comfortable in these situations as he goes on. Honestly he hasn't had a ton of redzone reps with how explosive this offense has been.
- Arvelle Reese is the best LB in America. On the "not strip sack", I swear to goodness Reese was running a 4.3 as he chased down Navarro. The dude is unbelievable and is the best athlete on the field. I found myself not even watching the ball, and just following Reese. Matt P has both Reese and Downs playing "backyard football". Letting them roam and use their athletic prowess to make plays.
- Inniss was visibly frustrated at the lack of targets (multiple instances of walking back to the huddle with his arms out towards Sayin), and I get it considering he has been under heat from this fanbase. But being at the game, he was open multiple times. Like, WIDE open. His only problem is that if he is wide open and Tate/JJ are 1-on-1, it is still probably more advantageous to throw it to Smith/Tate. They are just that good and explosive.
- Bo is clearly the best running back; however, Peoples once again shined in pass-pro. Hoping Bo gets a ton of pass-pro work during the OFF week. I don't even know if Bo is bad at it, I just know that Peoples is absolutely fantastic in pass-pro and has set up multiple deep touchdowns already this season by picking up a blitz.
- Redzone offense doesn't scare me. As I said, the redzone struggles were more on Sayin than they were play-calling, and I have full faith he will get better and better in those spots. Guys were open, but they were option 3/4. Sayin has the arm talent, and Smith/Tate have the ability to make those contested catches, so I can see where it is hard to tell Sayin to look off of Smith or Tate when they are 1-on-1. More times than not, that is the smart play. Screw it, 4 or 17 down there somewhere.
Overall feeling:
There is a noticeable change in atmosphere at Ohio Stadium. I'm not talking about the changes they made to the environment, I'm talking about the fans. Even at 13-9, there weren't many grumbles that used to fill Ohio Stadium during games like this. I was at the 38-0 Hawaii game in 2015, and the stadium was filled with pissed off fans.
I wrote in the offseason that it felt like more people are relaxed this year, and I definitely "felt" that by being at the game. Sure people booed when we kicked the field goals, but that is "normal" booing. I never got a sense, at least in my section, that the bulk of people were mad that we were only winning 23-9 in the 3rd quarter.
Ohio State has some things to work on, but I maintain that they are the best team in the nation. When all things are firing, no one is beating us. But even if the offense has a rough day, the defense will keep us around until Sayin/Tate/JJ inevitably make a big play.
Go Bucks.
