I've been wondering what to expect out of Bowen's coordination of our run game. It's a tall order to replace Chip Kelly in this role, but they both use a type of power-spread.  I found this article on VT's offense with some good information. It's specifically about Bowen's installation of split-zone schemes.

The beginning of the 2024 VT Football Season was met with a landslide of disappointment. Specifically, the offense all Hokie fans were foaming at the mouth to see in 2024 did not seem to match the output and creativity we saw in the back half of the 2023 season. Why? Modern Offenses today are not as simple as a playbook binder full of plays and formations with every player memorizing each and every call. In order to keep up, offenses today need to find the middle ground between simplifying their scheme so players can execute at a high level without thinking, while also being creative enough to keep defenses in conflict.

An article that describes Split Zone and traces it to Joe Moorhead, who taught it to Bowen:

The 11P Y-Off/Wing Split Zone rushing attack made popular by Fordham HC and Playcaller Joe Moorhead showcases Bowen’s offensive roots. Bowen was the OL coach under Moorhead at Fordham, mastering the scheme many coaches have tried to replicate firsthand. Most offenses today have some variation of Split Zone in their playbook, however not many use it as an offensive building block to unlock a larger portion of their offense.

I'm very interested to see what our run game looks like this Saturday!
