Former Ohio State and Texas cornerback Ryan Watts’ NFL career is likely over due to a serious neck injury he suffered during last year’s preseason with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Steelers general manager Omar Khan said Monday in a statement that the Steelers were releasing Watts after consulting with their medical team, medical experts and Watts’ representatives and agreeing that it was in Watts’ best interest to discontinue playing football, though Khan said the organization will provide support for Watts as he transitions into life after football.

The Steelers selected Watts, who played at Ohio State in 2020 and 2021 before transferring to Texas, in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL draft after two seasons with the Longhorns. He did not play in any regular-season games due to the injury.
