**UPDATE: Changed article title from, "Florida Legislation to Allow Schools to Facilitate NIL to Students."**
In a presser on the Ohio State recruiting class, OSU Head Coach Ryan Day seemed to have expressed dismay in how NIL is being facilitated between schools and athletes. Ryan was quoted as saying, "The coaches and Ohio State are not allowed to set those type of deals up, that has to come from outside the university."
In Florida, Chip LaMarca one of the leaders for the original NIL legislation announced yesterday he is introducing a change to the FL law. The new bill strikes language in the original bill that prohibited schools from “causing compensation to be directed” to athletes.
This will put Florida on an even playing field with schools from other states with less restrictive NIL rules - We're looking at you A&M and Texas.
Ohio already has a similar law to Florida's new proposal. Ohio's law does not forbid anyone at the school from facilitating NIL. It is worded wierdly liked you'd expect any law: "Nothing in this executive order does any of the following:" "Requires a state institution of higher education, private college, athletic association, conference, or other group or organization with authority over intercollegiate athletics to identify, create, facilitate, negotiate, or otherwise enable opportunities for a student-athlete to earn compensation for use of the student-athlete's name, image, or likeness"
Coach Day went on to say, "‘What really are the rules here, other than the fact that the coaches and school can’t set up the deals?"
I'm not sure what law Coach Day is referring to, the NCAA's stance is "NCAA NIL rules do not override state, college/university or conference specific NIL rules." This means there may be something at the school or conference level that may be prohibiting OSU from facilitating these deals.
