A Math Exercise in Loss of Focus

It was clear that one of the dynamics of the 2nd half the other day was a loss of focus and energy on the part of our team.  Let's look at that with a little bit of math.

The typical game has about 140 plays.  If you're a starter and you play all the snaps, that will average out to 70 plays, times 9 games = 630 snaps (in reality most players play fewer than that, but just hear me out).  The average play lasts about 7 seconds from snap to whistle.  That 74 minutes of actually game time for the entire season.

Now compare that to the hours and hours of prep time these players put in during the offseason.  I'll make a wild guess that it's 3 hours per day, 6 days a week, for 8 months (could be a lot more).  That's 620 hours of sweat and effort, and doesn't even prep count time spent during the season.

So we have 74 minutes of "fun" as a reward for 620 hours of preparation.  How in hell could every player not be fully engaged for every snap?
