This is a thread dedicated to discussing Ohio State's prospects for 2020, which I think are very good.
Here's a short list of key pieces we stand to lose during this offseason:
-co-DC Jeff Hafley
-DE Chase Young
-CB Jeffrey Okudah
-CB Shaun Wade
-CB Damon Arnette
-S Jordan Fuller
-DT Davon Hamilton
-LB Malik Harrison
-WRs KJ Hill, Ben Victor, and Austin Mack
-RB JK Dobbins
-OG Jonah Jackson
Here's key pieces we retain:
-Most of our coaching staff (knock on wood)
-QB Justin Fields
-WR Chris Olave
-WR Garret Wilson
-TE Jeremy Ruckert
-RB Master Teague
-C Josh Myers
-OT Thayer Munford
-OG Wyatt Davis
-OG Nicholas Petit-Frere
-LB Baron Browning
-LB Justin Hilliard
-DE Jonathan Cooper
-DE Tyler Friday
-DE Zach Harrison
-DE Tyreke Smith
-DB Amir Riep
-DT Tommy Togiai
Key pieces arriving:
-A new DC (hopefully someone great)
-QBs Jack Miller and CJ Stroud
-WRs Julian Fleming, JS Njigba, Gee Scott Jr, Mookie Cooper
-OT Paris Johnson
-C Luke Wypler
-S Lathan Ransom
-DB Ryan Watts
-S Lejond Cavazos
Outlook:
Our offense is going to be downright nasty, assuming Teague can step up and be even 75% the runningback that Dobbins has become. Our O-line is only losing one major contributor, and the depth we have is pretty good. Our receiver corps will be the best in the nation, and Justin Fields will be more experienced and deadly as a signal caller. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect we'll have the #1 offense in the nation next season.
On defense, there are a ton of question marks, and Ryan Day absolutely must knock it out of the park on hiring Hafley's replacement because we're going to have to basically replace our entire secondary. On D-line and in the LB corps, we're taking some big hits with the loss of Chase Young, Davon Hamilton, and Malik Harrison. I think it's natural to expect we're going to take a step back on defense, though I'd be shocked if we were terrible--I'm thinking our defense will be great but not quite elite, say top 15 instead of top 3.
Overall: I think Ohio State is going to be very, very good next year. I think we'll be worse on defense but slightly better on offense. Ohio State should expect to beat Oregon in the season opener, and then should run the table on the Big Ten. The only game that really concerns me next season is @ Penn State. Their offense doesn't frighten me, but they might have the best defensive player in the country next season in LB Micah Parsons. In a close game with the Whiteout going, that could be a heartbreaker for the Buckeyes if they're not careful.
My prediction for next season: 13-0 regular season followed by a playoff appearance.
