While watching clips of Nick Saban's post-game press conference last night, he made the following comment regarding his team beating its rival and going undefeated in the SEC...

"I think the SEC is a pretty good league and our team going undefeated in it is nice... but it really doesn't mean anything if we can't take advantage of the opportunity before us in the SEC championship game next week Vs Georgia."

This is simply an observation, but it struck me as a possible philosophical line in the sand between Saban and Meyer, college football's two best recruiters and two of its three best coaches. Meyer, as he always does, spoke about enjoying the win, how big it is to beat our rival... and he's 100% correct... and how family is what truly matters to him. Conversely, Saban said that his team beating its rival and going undefeated in what is widely considered the best conference in college football (again) is "nice," but that it "doesn't really mean anything" if they can't beat Georgia.

It's just an interesting juxtaposition between Saban, clearly the best coach in college football right now, and Meyer, probably number two based on career accomplishments/recruiting, and how they react to beating their hated rivals and what's next. It also speaks to a discernible difference between The Game and 'Bama vs Auburn. Ohio State Vs *ichigan is THE greatest rivalry in college football history, and beating TTUN means more to the OSU community than beating Auburn does to the Alabama program. On one hand, that's great... and I buy into it as much as anyone alive as someone who grew up during the Ten Year War... but on the other hand, I wonder if 'title or bust' matters more inside Saban's program than it does inside Meyer's, and by extension, if that approach is the difference for Saban's team year in and year out, because as great as Meyer and Ohio State have been, there is absolutely no denying Alabama's decade plus of dominance.
