I think Fox does a great job with the NFL broadcasts, but for whatever reason I feel like it has always done a terrible job with college games. I'm a little torn on Gus Johnson, as his enthusiasm can make it fun, but sometimes it comes off too contrived. Anyway, yesterday during the broadcast (and forgive me if this got mentioned in the game thread, but I don't like going in those) after we scored late to make it 38-33, we were lining up for a very important 2-point attempt. Joel Klatt said OSU was working hard on the scenario at Thursday's practice. Johnson asked what they worked on, and Klatt said, "End around to Dixon," which is the exact play we ran. The problem is that there was still 4 minutes left to play and we needed another score and potentially another 2-point conversion. The broadcasters are allowed at the practices so they can better explain plays AFTER they happen and offer insights, not tell everyone in the world what specific plays will be run in very specific situations. It'd be like saying early in the game the coach was determined to fake a punt or have a surprise onside kick. There's no way someone didn't hear that and text the info to one of the Penn State people in the booth. It didn't matter because we ran the play immediately and they didn't have time to get it communicated, but had we run a different play there (knowing we'd need another later in the game), when we lined up for the next conversion after the final TD, they would have had a real good idea of what was coming. Worse would have been if we had saved the play on the conversion, but then later had the ball at the 2 for a final play down 38-33, and their booth had that info. All broadcasters get inside access, but I have never before heard one "leak out" someone's game plan like that. Very unprofessional.
