Stats can be misleading. We all know that. But this is one that I find truly amazing. Ohio State is producing NFL talent at a ridiculous pace. If you look at the history of the Buckeyes, John Cooper was the only one that could compare to Urban when it comes to producing NFL talent. No offense to Jim Tressel, because he beat Cooper in the areas that mattered (UM, Bowl Games, Natl' Title), but you have to admit, Cooper was a talent producing machine (Remember that 2003/2004 class was all Cooper). However, Tressel and Cooper did compare in one area. They both had several players win National Awards (Heisman, Thorpe, Outland, etc). Urban has had 1, and that was Pat Elfein last year as he won the Rimington Trophy, which was also our first award since Malcolm Jenkins in 2008.
There is a good chance we could be shutout again from the national awards. Billy Price (Rimington) and JT (Davey O'Brein, Walter Camp, Heisman?), appear to be our only chances. At the end of the day, these national awards don't mean anything, but it is still interesting that the Buckeyes have loaded the NFL with talent over the past few seasons, and only have one award to show for it.
Any thoughts on why this might be? It could all be just dumb bad luck. Joey Bosa would have won all kinds of awards, but 2014 just happened to be the year Scooby Wright went nuts and literally swept nearly every possible award for LB's/DE's.
Like I said, those awards don't matter, and Urban has had extreme success in the important areas; however, it is just kind of crazy OSU has put guys like Hooker, Thomas, Lattimore, Conley, Apple, Zeke, Hyde, Bosa, Lee, Kwon and Bell, among a host of offensive lineman, into the NFL in the past two seasons, and none of them, other than Bosa and Elfein, received much, if any, hype for national awards.
