Maryland is not a good team. However, they are also not Unlv, Army, or Rutgers. For the first time in a month, Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day were forced to change some things up. The main example is the "Mesh" play we have heard and talked so much about. Maryland was the first team since OU to successfully limit the Bucks success on said play. However, OSU was able to burn them on it once.

I've seen numerous comments on this site about how the offense does not change until forced to change. Meaning, we will run a play into the ground until it stops working, and then change. The approach fans have been wanting is to run a play, make the defense respect it, and then hit them with a counter off of said play.

The second drive of the game was the perfect example of that. We all know the "Mesh" play is one of Kevin Wilson's favorites. So it makes sense that Maryland probably focused on that play a ton in practice. So what does Kevin Wilson do? He runs a counter off of it right from the get go.

This is the kind of "one step ahead" play-calling fans have been craving. Wilson did not wait to see how Maryland would react to the play. Instead, he assumed the defenders would get perked up thinking, "Here it comes, we have practiced this", and then used their aggressiveness against them.

Being only the second drive of the game, it is almost certain that this play had been scripted all week. Hopefully he can continue this aggressive play-calling later into games when the plays are not already scripted.
