Let me get this out of the way first: I completely support any means to protect the safety of all football players. A strict concussion recovery policy, safer equipment, and an emphasis on penalizing unnecessary shots to the head/ hits on defenseless players can only benefit the long term health of the men who play the game we love so much.
But folks, this is football! It's a contact sport in which pads are gonna crack, guys will get drilled by a big time hit (See: Denzel Ward), and injuries unfortunately happen.
When the targeting rule was introduced, it had the right idea to try combat dirty hits meant to intentionally injure the opponent. It's definitely out of hand at this point and needs reevaluated by the NCAA. The outcome of games have already been, and will continue to be, altered based on an official's interpretation of what is, and is not, "targeting." After all, it's s till football and big hits are part of the game!
Will any changes ever be made? What could they be?
