Kai Bates-Diop, a 16-year old high school sophomore and the younger brother of Ohio State's Keita Bates-Diop, collapsed during a recent basketball practice due to unexpected cardiac arrest.

Kai was revived and is expected to recover. Buckeyes head coach Thad Matta said recently it's unclear if he'll ever be able to play basketball again, however.

In the meantime, the Bates-Diop family and his school, University High in Normal, Illinois, are raising money to purchase automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for schools that can't afford them. The use of the AED saved Kai Bates-Diop's life.

T-shirts with Kai's name are being sold for $10 apiece to raise these funds and donations are also being accepted.

“We’re trained in professional care, but if we didn’t have an AED, it could have affected his outlook,” said Biehl. “Anyone can use the device, CPR certified or not. It literally talks you through the instructions. It’s a smart little machine made for a layperson. Every school should have an AED because you never know when something could happen.”

State law requires schools to have one AED in each building. U High has five.

“The doctors that treated Kai said they’ve witnessed families experience less positive outcomes because schools don’t have portable AEDs,” said Wilma Bates.

The Bates-Diop family and high school athletic department decided to sell T-shirts to raise money for schools that can’t afford the $1,600 device.

More than 250 shirts were sold on Friday from the office of Wendy Smith, U High's athletic director. The front of the T-shirt has a heart with Kai's name and his No. 13, while the back has the words "CPR & AEDs SAVE LIVES."

Shirts are $10 each and will be on sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Feb. 24 in the U High Activities Office. Donations can be mailed to: AEDs, c/o University High School, 500 W. Gregory, Campus Box 7100, Normal, IL 61790-7100.
