Two things: Jeremiah Smith was not a consensus All-American his freshman year.  Bishop states this about 3 times a week.  I'm not arguing he shouldn't have been. Just fact.

SMU is not a good school and nowhere near the profile the B1G would have any interest in. 88 in US News. 25% business, management, marketing undergrads. UG student body of 7,500.
