This was posted in /r/CFB today and I thought it was so interesting.
Kyler Murray got over $4m to play baseball while still a NCAA student athlete. Here's the relevant rule from the NCAA Manual:
"12.1.3 Amateur status if Professional in Another sport. - A professional athlete in one sport may represent a member institution in a different sport and may receive institutional financial assistance in the second sport. (Revised: 4/27/06 effective 8/1/06)"
Why stop there? There's no legislative body that determine's what a professional sport is out in the real world. Anyone can start Booster Bowling, LLC and start paying 5-star recruits a whole lot of money for the privilege of seeing them bowl on Tuesday nights in the off season. What could go wrong?
To expand on this, what if an MLB owner with no salary cap, let's use ND alum and Cleveland Indians owner Larry Dolan for example. What's to stop him from just drafting 5 star high school football players in the late rounds of the MLB draft and giving them 7 figure contracts if they play football for Notre Dame?
