Stew Mandel at the Athletic provided some good offseason fodder this morning and ranked the top 25 coaches in college football. (Note: Athletic is a premium site so I wont link or paste the full the content - though I'd recommend subscribing)
Here's his top 10:
1. Nick Saban
2. Urban Meyer
3. Dabo Swinney
4. Chris Petersen
5. Gary Patterson
6. Mark Dantonio
7. Jimbo Fisher
8. David Shaw
9. Chip Kelly
10. Kirby Smart
This was the blurb on Meyer:
It’s a measure of just how high Meyer has raised the bar for himself and the Buckeyes that they won 12 games and a Big Ten championship last season and many consider it to have been a down year. In six seasons, he’s gone 73-8 overall and 47-3 in Big Ten play.
Other B1G coaches: Franklin (11), Harbaugh (13), Chryst (15), Fitzgerald (18), Frost (25). Which means 7 of the top 25 are currently in our very own conference.
I mostly agree with his rankings, but they're obviously very subjective. The hardest part is deciding how much the last season or two should be weighted vs their career accomplishments. But a good read nonetheless.
