Well ladies and gents, the first Saturday of September finally arrived, and it did not disappoint. I mean not to make any small talk, so let the analysis begin.

Don't mess with MENSA

My oh my, it seems the MENSA bandwagon is piling up quickly, BUT WE WERE THE ORIGINALS!!!!
Houston proved once more to the entire nation that they mean business. Tom Herman, who is undoubtedly the #1 candidate for some major jobs (looking at you, LSU) has been a head coach for 15 games, and in that span he has out-coached the likes of: Bobby Petrino, Jimbo Fisher, and Bob Stoops. Quite the résumé. And now with their 33-23 victory against Oklahoma, Houston is now in prime position to run the table and be in position to make the playoff.
Could you imagine an Urban vs. Herman matchup in the playoff?

Chris Ash and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad début

From one former Buckeye assistant to another.
In case you didn't know, Rutgers is awful. Former Silver Bullets Co-Defensive Coordinator Chris Ash has his work cut out for him in Piscataway. His début as the head man of the Scarlet Knights was ugly (and that's putting it lightly), going across the country to lose 48-13 to Chris Petersen and the upstart Washington Huskies.
If Coach Ash suddenly realizes what he got himself into, I'd be the first to welcome him back to Columbus.

Preseason polls need to be abolished

Oklahoma (#3), LSU (#5), Tennessee (#9), Sparty (#12), TCU (#13), USC (#20), and Florida (#25) all looked pitiful in their openers. If teams like Michigan, USC, and much of the SEC wasn't enough to prove this in past seasons, this is almost impossible to ignore. Please AP, can you at least wait till the second week, if not longer?

SEC speed = quick to make excuses

The SEC has proven time and again over the past few years that they are not the best conference, but they took it to a near comical level on this occasion. Mississippi State missing a 25-yard field goal to lose to South Alabama, Kentucky blowing a 25 point lead to lose to Southern Miss, Les Miles reverting back to his usual ways and setting the forward pass back 20 years in Baton Rouge, and plenty others (and that's excluding the beatdown that's coming Ole Miss's way on Monday).
I've been saying it for the past two years, and I believe it has become quite apparent, B1G > SEC.
Still, there was one SEC team that defied all this.

Bama, O.O

I turned on my TV this morning, expecting to see Bama still scoring.
Before the game, I thought USC could hang with Bama, and that they did... for just over a quarter. Much like the Bucks, Bama proved that they do not take a step back, even with all the talent they lost from the previous season. I totally expect to see another playoff contest between Bama and the Bucks this season.

Now that the first Saturday of the season has concluded, let us enjoy more football tonight, and hope for an Irish letdown. Cheers!
