I highly doubt this hasn’t already been shared on here yet before.. It’s already several months old. But I was just searching online for some Buckeye content to consume and happened to find it. So I figured I would at least take the opportunity to share it, if not.. I found this whole interview pretty enjoyable. I’m quickly becoming a big fan of Coach Patricia’s.
Matt Patricia, on Games With Names podcast with Julian Edelman, break down the evolution of his defense and the influences that had the most impact on him as a coordinator. Nick Saban especially, with his and Belichick’s development of his cover 1, 2, and famous pattern matching schemes (cover 7). He also mentions his own play calling “Bible” and how it happened to come about and developed throughout the course of his career.
He goes through their multiple packages to counter the offense’s 11, 12, and mixed
personnel groups..
Listen to the description of what his key traits of a good defense are. And how many of those boxes this Buckeye team checks before ever stepping on to the field of play.. Especially the part about former New England safety Patrick Chung and see how that also perfectly describes Caleb Downs with his ability to fill the same role in Patricia’s Defense..
The admission he made, that I loved most, is his willingness to adapt his game-plan to what his players do the best. Which is exactly why, I think our defense hasn’t missed a beat this season. And may actually prove to be better than last year’s team after the season plays out. It sure does seem like we’ve got a good one in this guy..
