If we open things up, more people will get infected, and some of these people will unfortunately get very sick. Unfortunately that’s likely just as true if we do it today or a month from now or six months from now.

We were told originally to radically change habits to prepare for the onslaught. We needed to lessen the curve so the health care system could ramp up supplies of bed, masks, Machines etc. But there was never a promise that we could make this thing go away by doing that, only lessen the damage by slowing it.

Now though, it seems like a lot of people somewhere got the idea we are just supposed to do this indefinitely till it’s gone. Where they got this idea I don’t know. Criticism of states opening things like beaches back up seems to imply the existence of a different alternative. I have not seen that alternative presented yet. No successful vaccine for a coronavirus has ever been invented, it’s apparently pretty tricky to do. There is no guarantee one will work this time and even if it did, it is at minimum a year out. We can’t do this for a year obviously. This is inevitable unfortunately, let’s do our best to isolate the most vulnerable but we have to get herd immunity to protect those people.

People seem to like to trivialize things like socializing, sports, concerts, going to events. Another way to look at these things, would be to say they are all the joys of actually living. Please stop criticizing people who want to go back to work, back to their passions. Please stop attacking states opening things back up if there is no better alternative. Doing the same thing and coming out to the same scenario down the line does not seem like a better scenario.
