I just learned that Dr. G passed away on 3 October. For aeros, Dr. G was a legend. Every aero I know has at least one Dr. G story while he was there.
For me, Dr. G was why I went to Ohio State. I meet him at the NAR nationals when they were held in Columbus. When I told him I wanted to study Aero Eng he immediately explained why I should attend OSU. As a freshman, I skipped his orientation class that was intended to convince people to study aero. Next time I saw him he asked why I missed his class, I said I already knew I was going to be an aero.
I remember running a test with a 1/24 scale semi truck model and a Mustang to see how close you needed to be to a truck to get it to pull you along from the airflow. (Dr. G happened to drive the same model Mustang as in the tunnel.) Flying from Don Scott ti test wing designs in a Piper Cherokee. Dinners at his house. Judging model rocket conetsts with him.
Ohio State lost a great one.
