Hey guys, I know we have many lawyers (and other self-proclaimed legal experts - lol) amongst us and I had a question concerning renters rights, since as we all know the landlords surrounding the campus area are just of the most perfect moral standing. My next landlord (which is a large entity, not an individual) set my move-in date for August 17th and the move out date for July 25th of next year. No problem, that just means the rent will be pro-rated, right? Wrong! They are insisting that I pay the full rent amount in 12 installments, despite being prevented from living on the premises for essentially 3 weeks of 1/12 of the lease year. Do I have any options to force their hand here? It seems totally illegal to me, as this is essentially just outright theft. They also told me after I had asked if I could just move in now that I could not and if I wanted to I had to pay an early move-in fee. Basically, I'm paying for a full month for which I won't be allowed to live there by the landlord for 3/4 of it, and if I want to live on the premises for which I'm already paying for, I have to pay an additional fee. Any advice would be awesome, and for those who have none to offer feel free to share your similar experiences below and see if anyone can help you out as well. Thanks!
