I had the pleasure, nay, honor of seeing Christone "Kingfish" Ingram at the Kent Stage last night. Gentlemen, I cannot adequately describe what I witnessed, but I imagine it was like catching Hendrix at Cafe Wha? in 1966 or Stevie Ray at some Texas juke joint in 1972. A new blues master has arrived and he is every bit as good as either of those two men at this point in his career.
Hailing from Clarksdale, Mississippi, mere miles from Robert Johnson's crossroads, Kingfish is equal parts throwback and vanguard. While showing proper deference to his Delta roots, he adds elements of funk and rock to create a unique sound. Quite simply, there is nobody doing what Kingfish is doing.
