Went and saw Into The Cold Blue last night. It's an HBO documentary that uses footage shot during WWII under the direction of William Wyler. Wyler was making the movie "Memphis Belle The Story of a Flying Fortress" for which he shot 15 hours of film. The raw footage was discovered in the US Archives and restored to make Into the Cold Blue. Much like Band of Brothers and The Pacific, it includes interviews with veterans of the 8th. It was very moving and powerful.
Somewhere in my stuff I have an 8th AF patch a neighbor gave me when I was a young kid. I wish now I had asked him about his experiences but growing up most of the dads were WWII vets and never really talked about it and we never asked. They were just dads.
As a historical note, the Memphis Belle is now on display at Wright Pat.
HBO did a one day only screening in theaters and will release it shortly on HBO.
