Isn't it ironic, dontcha think? Three days after this album was released the band was annihalted in a plane crash. Subsequent re-issues of the album omitted the flames but the overall effect was the same. Arguably the greatest Southern Rock band, and a stalwart regular old rock band, was no more.
Lynyrd Skynyrd released "Street Survivors" today in 1977. Packed full of classic rock staples and heralding the arrival of the incomparable Steve Gaines on guitar, the album was the last from the band until 1991.
Gaines injected new life into the band and seamlessly integrated into their sophisticated multi-guitar attack. He co-wrote one of their best deep tracks, "I Know a Little" as well as the minor hit "You Got That Right".
Apart from Gaines, this album saw the band fully rounding into form. Always a tight outfit, they were primed to take the next big step. Some heavy steps into the blues, along with the boogie woogie they had patented, this band was ready to evolve.
